The APIDA Center is launching a new series: SDSU APIDA Faculty Talk Series. We aim to amplify APIDA Research at SDSU. Come learn from Dr. Amy Wong (AAS and Sociology) on Wed, March 20th from 5-6 p.m. at the APIDA Center. Dr. Wong said, "“My talk will focus on Asian American college students who have experienced suicide ideation from a strength-based perspective. While I found that various forms of racism and trauma contribute to the exacerbation of existing mental health challenges, I also learned that individuals were determined to manage their suicidal feelings, tendencies, and behaviors on a daily basis. Their stories of vulnerability and resiliency were shared with me at the height of the global pandemic in 2020-2021. I used narrative research because it honors the tradition of storytelling by recognizing that each person has an important journey that is worth sharing.”

Dr. Alfred P. Flores is an assistant professor of Asian American Studies at Harvey Mudd College. His research and teaching focuses on diaspora, labor, indigeneity, militarism, oral history, and settler colonialism in Micronesia. Join us as Dr. Flores discusses his new book, Tip of the Spear: Land, Labor, and US Settler Militarism in Guahan, 1944-1962 (Cornell University Press). The US military occupation of Guåhan was based on a co-constitutive process that included CHamoru land dispossession, discursive justifications for the remaking of the island, the racialization of civilian military labor, and the military's policing of interracial intimacies. Within a narrative that emphasizes CHamoru resilience, resistance, and survival, Flores uses a working-class labor analysis to examine how the militarization of Guåhan was enacted by a minority settler population to contribute to the US government's hegemonic presence in Oceania. Book Talk & Lecture.
