BOARDS & COMMITTEES

Awards Committee

Participation on the committee includes reviewing award applications and selection of awardees, organizing and planning all aspects of the annual Aztec Achievement Awards.

Children's Center Board

Children’s Center Board Provides direction to the A.S. operated SDSU Children’s Center. This Board sets policy, monitors budgets, develops and coordinates fund raising projects, and events that support program goals and promote strong relationships between families, staff and students.

Cultural Arts and Special Events Board (CASE)

Proposes, plans, publicizes, and coordinates entertainment events and activities throughout the year. These programs are oriented to unite the campus community, with the opportunity to explore new and different ideas, be informative and educational—and provide entertainment. CASE coordinates celebrity lectures, concerts, cultural activities, and special events like Homecoming and GreenFest.

Elections Committee

Organizes and administers all aspects of A.S. Spring Elections including enforcement of the Election Code, poll sites, establishing ballot positions and penalties.

External Affairs Board

Ensures that student interests are advocated for at the local, state, and national level. The board participates in lobbying activities through its’ Lobby Corp, and regularly involves members in lobby meetings with elected officials and legislators. The board regularly monitors issues related to higher education. EAB members have the opportunity to coordinate and participate in community service activities that benefit the community. Board members regularly review the Aztec Legal & Financial Service (free student legal service provided by A.S.), and recommend changes as necessary. Finally, the board reviews student housing issues and implements programming to assist students.

Lobby Corp

Lobby Corp is the official student advocacy group for San Diego State University students to elected and appointed members of the local, state and federal government. These students are the best representation of our student body and are charged with traveling to ensure that your voice is heard.

Finance Board

Determines spending priorities, allocates A.S. funds to various programs and provides general oversight of the $21 million annual A.S. Budget. Participation on this Board entails reviewing all budget requests for student organizations and A.S. programs and recommending the annual budget to the A.S. Council.

Facilities Board

Provides direction on issues pertaining to Student Union fees, office space allocations, and user fees. The board establishes policy and deliberates all other matters which affect A.S.’s leased and operated facilities. It plans for future development of A.S. Facilities including Aztec Center’s expansion and renovation (Modern Space), the Open Air Theater, Aztec Recreation Center and the Cox Arena at Aztec Bowl.

Graduate Student Association

Plans and coordinates programming relevant to the graduate student experience at the University, including new graduate students’ transitioning experience to the campus, professional development opportunities during the course of their graduate program, and relationship with the University after graduation, from the perspective of Associated Students and consistent with the University’s mission and goals. The GSA advocates graduate students’ issues and perspectives concerning how the graduate student community might be affected by university policies, services, programs and/or facilities.

Green Love Sustainability Advisory Board

Reviews and make recommendations regarding policies, programs and procedures to encourage and promote the AS Council's sustainability goals, assist in communicating the Council's sustainability goals, initiatives, programs and services within the AS organization, to SDSU clubs and student organizations and to the campus community, and identify and its best efforts to address student sustainability interests, concerns and ideas by tracking trends, and by collaborating with "green" student organizations and other campus departments and groups engaged in promoting sustainable issues on the SDSU campus.

GreenFest Sub-Committee

Coordinates the planning of the spring festival which promotes environmental sustainability awareness and Aztec Pride through 3 days of programming components such as a dance competition, outdoor film series, and a campus- wide community service project. The major culminating event on the 3rd and final day includes multiple music stages and concerts, a student organization performance stage, student organization, vendor food, and informational booths, and interactive “green” activities.

The Multi-Cultural Caucus

Advises the AS Council on all related policy matters and to undertake progressive efforts to promote diversity through education, communication, and action within Associated Students; to ensure that operations of the Associated Students and other pertinent policy-making entities involving diversity are monitored by students; and to ensure that all action taken by the Associated Students reflects the diverse needs of all of its constituents.

Recreation Board

The Recreation Board sets policy, and develops and monitors all SDSU recreation services. Programs include activities in the Aztec Recreation Center, (intramural sports, sport clubs, recreation classes, informal rec, group exercise, Spinning, personal training, special events), Aztec Adventures (team building, outings, rock climbing), Aztec Center Bowling and Games (bowling, classes, games, private parties), Aztec Aquaplex (aquatics, swim lessons), and Mission Bay Aquatic Center (classes, water skiing, sailing, wind surfing, surfing, rowing, kayaking and keel boat sailing and aquatic-related youth camps).

Rules Committee

Assists the A.S. Council in the maintenance, interpretation and updating of the internal structural policies of the A.S. This committee also reviews any grievances or complaints brought against any Council or board member related to ethics, conduct or bylaws.

Student Affairs Board

Shall be to coordinate the research and development of University policy affecting SDSU students on campus as it relates to all area of the Division of Student Affairs. Board shall assist the AS Council in formulating policies & positions, which can be advocated on behalf of SDSU students as it relates to efficient operations of Student Affairs departments. Provides a forum for student engagement that evaluates and enhances the level and quality of programs and services offered to SDSU students through the Division of Student Affairs.

University Affairs Board

Being a part of the UAB gives students the opportunity to participate in the Good Neighbor Program (GNP). The GNP explores and carries out methods to educate the campus community of rules, policies and expectations that may affect their wellbeing and quality of life in surrounding neighborhoods. It is also designed to improve the campus community by providing opportunities for community involvement, through community service and other activities. Lastly, the UAB gives students an opportunity to be a party of the Study Abroad Scholarship Sub-committee explained below.

Good Neighbor Program (GNP) Community Development and 1st Response Team

Educates the campus community about current laws, policies, and expectations. Students are given opportunities to reach out to and pass along vital information about neighbor relations and laws regarding conduct to SDSU students who live in the surrounding neighborhoods. GNP volunteers will also have the opportunity to assist with the coordination and implementation of large-scale community service activities in the College Area.

Study Abroad Scholarship Evaluation Committee

As a part of the Study Abroad Scholarship Evaluation Committee, students will have the opportunity to promote international experience, to encourage study abroad, and to select recipients for this important award.

UNIVERSITY BOARDS & AUTHORITIES

Communications Authority

Advises the University President on the public service, administrative, financial and philosophical relationship between San Diego State University and student-run print/broadcast media. It represents the mutual interests of the University community in the development of publications, radio, and other media services for the educational and informational benefit of students, faculty and staff of San Diego State University, and the general public.

SENATE COMMITTEES

Academic Policy and Planning

Considers and makes recommendations to the Senate concerning issues of academic philosophy, standards, and conduct, as well as, faculty-student relations, the governance of the University, and other matters of academic policy.

Academic Resources and Planning

Makes recommendations to the Senate concerning the allocation of University resources. The Committee shall act as the deliberative body of the Senate on all issues pertaining to, but not limited to, University budgets, allocation of facilities and positions, and allocation of special funds.

Bookstore Advisory Committee

Improves the relationship between the faculty and the Aztec Shops Campus Store by reviewing Campus Store policies, textbook requisitions, sales data, and custom course packets. The Committee shall be especially sensitive to specific problems and complaints that are brought to its attention in writing.

Campus Development Committee

Represents the University community in all deliberations and decisions regarding major aspects of campus development. The committee shall review the Campus Master Plan and Five-year Capital Outlay Program at least annually and shall report to the Senate on the status of these items in September. The committee may also propose changes on its own initiative and shall report to the Senate such recommendations.

Constitution & Bylaws

Reviews the Constitution and Bylaws of the Senate and recommends changes. It reports its recommendations concerning proposed amendments, maintains the Faculty Handbook, and considers revision of the list of committees and functions.

Diversity, Equity & Outreach

Supports university-wide programs for the recruitment and retention of protected groups, subject to the approval of the President. It advises the University administration regarding Diversity, Equal Employment Opportunities, Outreach, and related matters.

Environment & Safety

Studies, advises, and reports to the Senate and administration on matters relating to the safety, health, and learning conditions in the campus environment. The Committee shall investigate problems, including but not limited to: health, hazardous materials and waste, safety, emergency preparedness, matters of excessive noise or traffic, and other matters that detrimentally impact upon the campus environment and learning conditions.

Faculty Honors and Awards Committee

Responsible for nominations of faculty to the following honors and awards: Emeritus status, CSU Academic Senate Outstanding Professor Award, Alumni Award for Outstanding Faculty Contribution to the University, and such other honors and awards as the Senate from time to time shall designate.

Freedom of Expression

Will advise the President on the regulation and management of campus activities that fall under the university's freedom of expression policy, and will receive, evaluate, and act on complaints regarding freedom of expression activities.

General Education

Coordinates General Education policies and their implementation and reviews and evaluates current and proposed courses for General Education.

Graduate Council

Delegates University-wide jurisdiction over all matters relating to graduate studies including the development of University-wide policy on graduate programs, graduate student affairs, graduate research and scholarship, and the participation of faculty in graduate programs.

Instructional Technology Committee

Assists the Director of Media Technology Services in developing a long-range master plan for media resources. It reviews and makes recommendations on the mission and services of the center, as well as, on pertinent annual reports and budgets. It initiates recommendations for policy changes in instructional development and media systems at campus and system levels.

International Programs Council

Makes recommendations on policies and procedures to enhance the University's international activities and identifies existing areas of involvement in international activities and related resource commitments. It reports on funding programs and opportunities for external support of international activities.

Liberal Studies Committee

Develops policy, program, and curricular proposals for recommendation to the Senate and reviews all policy and curriculum proposals developed elsewhere that affect the Liberal Studies program. The Committee shall consult with deans of colleges and with other standing committees of the Senate regarding recommendations in preparing its proposals.

Library Committee

Advises the administration of the University and the Senate on matters related to allocation of all book and periodical funds and formulation and revision of Library policies and programs.

Staff Affairs Committee

Considers staff problems as they are related to Senate functions and selects staff members to serve on Senate and University committees as requested. It considers additional issues at the direction of the Senate or its Executive Committee.

Student Affairs Committee

Reviews items of mutual interest to faculty and students and makes recommendations to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Dean of Undergraduate Studies or the Dean of the Graduate Division and Vice President for Research. It reviews and recommends policies and procedures for the administration of financial aid programs.

Student Grievance Committee

Hears and seeks redress of student grievances concerning individual members of the faculty, administration, or staff, and when appropriate, makes recommendations concerning disciplinary action.

Sustainability

Will study and make recommendations to improve sustainable practices on campus, receive CSU or other instructions to the campus dealing with sustainability, serve as a resource for faculty wishing to undertake research or propose curriculum in sustainability, and coordinate with other appropriate committees on campus to ensure that sustainability is taken into consideration in their deliberations.

Undergraduate Council

Advises the Dean of the Division of Undergraduate Studies and proposes changes in policy dealing with undergraduate programs. It supervises specific University-wide undergraduate programs.

Undergraduate Curriculum Committee

Represents the faculty in all matters pertaining to the undergraduate curriculum and formulates opinions concerning changes. It also has the authority to propose changes on its own initiative. It reports to the faculty via the Senate, in writing, its findings and recommendations or criticisms in relevant curriculum matters.
