Media Studio Lead Technician Job Description
Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Operations and the supervision of the Technical Services Coordinator, the Media Studio Lead Technician position is intended to provide higher-level support for the Media Studio Technician team. This position is a leadership position and will be looked at to assist with higher-level trainings, perform critical administrative duties as needed and work higher-tiered special events in the absence of appropriate full-time staff. This position will assist in leading the direction of the Media Studio team by providing constructive feedback and suggesting ideas regarding improvements and changes.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary Functions
- Ensures the programs within the facilities are operating in accordance with guidelines established by the Associated Students, San Diego State University, and the Student Union facilities
- Provides direction to the part-time Media Studio Technicians and Backdoor Studio clients as needed
- Serves as the primary representative of Associated Students responsible for the studio needs in the absence of full-time staff
- Maintains positive working relations with other Studio staff in regards to project timelines
- Assists in overseeing larger sessions, providing aid in setup and advising other Studio staff
- Ensures adherence to Studio policies by Studio staff and clientele
- Communicates with Studio Technicians to assist in prioritizing tasks, requests, and concerns
- Assigns pre-event tasks or studio-enhancing projects to technicians to execute during lighter work periods
- Ensures all Backdoor Studio equipment remains secure and accounted for following studio session reservations
- Assists with the coordination of the Media Studio Technician training program to ensure training timelines are adhered to
- Performs other media studio-related duties, responsibilities and projects as assigned
Administration
- Responsible for the execution of day-to-day activities including reservations that take place within the Backdoor Studio
- Assists full-time staff in routine Safety Inspections for all Student Union facilities
- Creates training documents and updates Studio staff on policy and/or studio updates
- Prepares periodic email updates regarding potential policy/equipment updates to full-time staff based on day-to-day logistics assessments
- Ensures proper staffing through weekly scheduling of technician shifts and processes technician shift coverage requests
- Completes daily shift report, documenting information delineated on the online form and summarizing relevant details for review by Aztec Student Union full-time staff
- Completes Incident Reports, Injury/Illness Reports, Work Orders, and other documentation in terms of incidents that occurred within Aztec Student Union facilities
- Reviews daily shift reports submitted by Media Studio Technicians for issues and/or concerns that require attention
- Completes post-event reports documenting all aspects in regards to events held in any student union facilities
- Notifies full-time staff in a timely manner when it is determined that equipment is missing or it is found to be damaged
Studio Management
- Performs daily Media Studio inspections periodically throughout shift; generates reservations, equipment, and general usage reports, as well as reporting any issues discovered during inspections
- Coordinates and assists with the pre-session setup of all studio spaces as requested by clients in accordance with the daily setup sheets
- Advises clientele on proper usage techniques for applicable studio equipment
- Conducts periodic and frequent inventory audits to account for all equipment and assess inventory needs
Staff Supervision
- Assists the Assistant Director of Operations and Technical Service Coordinator in the training, education, and peer guidance of Media Studio Technicians to perform their duties and responsibilities in accordance with Aztec Student Union Student Employee Training Guide
- Leads in the set-up and strikes of studio setups throughout shift; ensures completion of upcoming programs on-time as dictated by the program schedule
- Assists with conducting bi-weekly staff meetings for the studio area
- Contributes to assessment for performance evaluations for Media Studio Technicians
- Assists with the recruitment, selection, and hiring of Media Studio Technicians
Customer Service and Collaboration
- Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with various A.S. and University departments and customers
Safety
- Ensures all operations are conducted with safety of staff and customers as first priority, and in accordance with the Injury and Illness Prevention Plan and other safety policies
- Adheres to Associated Students’ Code of Safe Practices
- Reports accidents to supervisor and reviews changes required to avoid reoccurrence. Ensures completion of proper documentation is accurate for each accident (employee and/or non-employee) and forwards to supervisor
- Reports maintenance problems and/or broken and unsafe equipment to the appropriate party immediately
- Performs fire and life safety procedures, and acts as a responsible party for ensuring fire and life safety in the absence of full-time staff
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum & Preferred Requirements
Education:
- Must be currently enrolled at San Diego State University, taking a minimum of 6 units
- Preferred candidate will be a returning student for at least one additional school year
Experience:
- Open to current internal Aztec Student Union Applicants only
- Minimum 1 semester of Aztec Student Union employment experience preferred

- Must be able to effectively direct the work of fellow part-time student employees
- Must be able to facilitate meetings, trainings, and orientations in a professional manner
- Must be detail-oriented and able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
- Must have a flexible schedule and willingness to work weekends, holidays, opening and closing shifts; ability to work during summers and break periods is preferred
- Must be able to provide constructive and positive feedback to student staff during shift
- Must be able to communicate building issues to appropriate full-time staff
- Demonstrate confidence in making appropriate decisions in difficult situations
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Knowledge of industry standard software/hardware including, but not limited to, Dante, Black Magic, Yamaha, etc.
- Advanced knowledge in the set-up, use and programming of media studio equipment, including, but not limited to, audio consoles, lighting fixtures/consoles, video cameras and switchers
- Knowledge of common-practice media studio equipment troubleshooting methods; willingness to learn and develop new media studio equipment preventative maintenance procedures
- Knowledge of Aztec Student Union facilities emergency evacuation procedures
- Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to relate and communicate effectively with a diverse population of students, staff, faculty, colleagues and guests
- Must have strong English language skills and the ability to read, write and verbally communicate at a level appropriate to the duties of the position
- Ability to operate a computer, proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and ability to learn and utilize new software programs
- Ability to gather and organize data, draw logical conclusions and discern implications
- Well organized, ability to effectively multi-task, ability to prioritize work, problem solve, make decisions and meet scheduled deadlines under pressure
- Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality
- Ability to work on a team and promote strong teamwork-centered values
SCHEDULE & WORKING CONDITIONS
This is a part-time (12-20 hours/week), position with expected hours to be worked during business hours of Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This position requires a flexible schedule and a willingness to work weekends, holidays and opening/closing shifts. The ability to work during summer and winter break periods is preferred.

RELATIONSHIPS
Inside the Organization:
- Directly supervised by the Assistant Director of Operations and the Technical Services Coordinator
- Provides direction to the part-time Media Studio Technicians, Audio Visual Technicians and other part-time subcontracted laborers
Outside the Organization:
- Provides coordination of services to general student population who are utilizing Backdoor Studio amenities
EMPLOYMENT CATEGORY: Range II, Step I – Starting Rate: $13.50 per hour
