Bowling ENS Instructor Job Description

Under the direction of the AS/SDSU Aztec Lanes Coordinator, the Bowling ENS Instructor is responsible for teaching the Exercise and Nutritional Sciences Beginning and Intermediate Bowling Credit Classes. Becoming an integral member of a hard working team of full-time and part-time staff within Aztec Recreation, the Instructor should possess the ability to work independently and as a team member. This individual’s work will have emphasis on teaching the rules and skills to allow an individual to successfully participate in recreational play. This individual should possess the willingness and flexibility to work with and promote the diverse instructional needs of the San Diego State University students and Aztec Recreation members are met while emphasizing a safe, positive, and educational environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary Functions

  • Instructs registered participants in basic skills, rules, and strategy
  • Develops and implements appropriate lesson plans, syllabus, and learning outcomes
  • Inspects classroom/program environment and equipment to ensure safety, handling emergencies according to established procedures
  • Completes administrative tasks such as skill assessment of participants, attendance, and grade submission
  • Ensures customer service standards are met; responds to physical, virtual, and verbal comment cards in a timely manner
  • Has an understanding of the policies and regulations of the facility, Aztec Recreation, and Associated Students and is able to explain and enforce the rules to inquiring members and participants
  • Becomes an important member in the Emergency Action Plan if an incident were to occur
  • Has knowledge of the mission and goals of Aztec Recreation and the Associated Students and demonstrates a commitment to achieving them
  • Ensures all class cancellations are communicated promptly by contacting all participants/professional staff along with posting notifications in the appropriate areas
  • Assists with other relevant duties as assigned

Customer Service and Collaboration

  • Establishes and maintains working relationships with various A.S. and University departments
  • Assists all students with questions and/or comments
  • Maintains positive and effective working relationships with all students
  • Informs supervisor of any participant issues

Safety

  • Ensures all operations are conducted with safety of staff and customers as first priority, and in accordance with the Injury and Illness Prevention Plan and other safety policies
  • Adheres to Associated Students’ Code of Safe Practices
  • Reports accidents to supervisor and reviews changes required to avoid reoccurrence Ensures completion proper documentation is completed for each accident (employee and/or non-employee) and forwards to supervisor
  • Reports maintenance problems and/or broken and unsafe equipment to the appropriate party immediately

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum & Preferred Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or certification in specified trade/skills preferred

Experience:

  • Experience participating and teaching/coaching activity required
  • Previous participation in and teaching of instructional courses preferred
  • Proficient computer skills are required: must be able to utilize Google Email and Calendar and create reports/presentations utilizing Windows, Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • Prior knowledge of Aztec Recreation is an asset

License & Certification:

  • First Aid and CPR/AED certifications are required

Trainings:

  • Must complete Gender Awareness and Computer Security Awareness trainings within 30 days of hire

  • Ability to instruct beginning and intermediate level courses
  • Ability to articulate, a strong, current, practical knowledge of the sport of bowling
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people effectively and diplomatically; must be able to work one-on-one and with groups with as many as 60 people
  • Ability to handle difficult situations involving participants with patience, good judgment, and with diplomacy is expected
  • Excellent customer service skills, including written and oral communication, required
  • Ability to take the initiative for additional projects and be self-motivated to initiate interactions with guests
  • Ability to work under pressure and with constant interruptions
  • Ability to prioritize workload
  • Ability to manage information flow (including internal, external and customer communication)
  • Ability to develop positive working relationships

SCHEDULE & WORKING CONDITIONS 

This is a part-time position. Must be willing to work in the mornings & afternoons (9:30am-2:30pm Monday-Friday) and be willing to work a maximum of 20 hours a week during academic year.

WORK ENVIRONMENT General classroom environment. The working environment is generally favorable. Lighting and temperature are adequate. Possible exposure to distracting/uncomfortable noise levels from bowling activity and pinsetters.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS This position requires the individual to spend 2-4 hours sitting or standing.

RELATIONSHIPS

Inside the Organization:

  • Reports to the Aztec Lanes Coordinator
  • Interacts with Aztec Lanes Attendants, Leads, and Equipment Mechanics
  • Further interactions may include other full-time staff within Aztec Recreation, including, but not limited to, Recreation Director, Associate Director of Programs, Marketing photographer and videographer

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered this position with Associated Students. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current Associated Students employees who apply for the position.
