Sales & Marketing Lead Job Description

Under the direction of the AS/SDSU Aztec Recreation Marketing Coordinator the Sales & Marketing Lead is responsible for managing and supervising the Aztec Recreation membership sales, secret shopping, and special event functions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary Functions

  • Hires, trains, coaches, schedules, motivates and disciplines sales representative and outreach efforts. Often works as a sales representative to cover tabling shifts, set-up promotional tabling at special events, deliver presentations, and to experience the sales assignment first-hand.
  • Responds and processes one-week passes every day, delegating as much as possible to sales reps and ensures phone calls are made to every one-week prospect. Sends monthly one-week pass email promotions. Maintains and reports statistics for the department for the number of passes received and converted each month.
  • Prepares bonus reports monthly carefully documenting all commissioned activities and cross referencing for accuracy. The Sales & Marketing Lead retains organized records and back-up. Regularly communicates with sales reps to motivate them to exceed quotas.
  • Ensures sales team is adequately trained and motivated. Trains sales reps each week in topics that include effective selling techniques used in telemarketing and touring. Ensures that reps know about and can effectively communicate promotional offerings.
  • The Lead develops, plans, manages and supervises numerous special events each semester including Open Houses, Health Expos, Explore SDSU, Street Fair tabling promotions and the ARC ‘til Dark. In the role, the Lead communicates with vendors and outside parties for special events, schedules staff, and makes room and equipment reservations and other duties as necessary to ensure successful and safe events.
  • Manages the Aztec Recreation secret shopper program; creating relevant, current scenarios, coordinating committee shop report reviews, ensuring commissions for outstanding employee performances, and disseminating results of secret shopping scenarios.
  • The Lead is responsible for recruiting and retaining 8 - 10 secret shoppers, ensures that shoppers are adequately qualified, diverse, and represent membership demographics and ensures that shoppers provide high quality reports. The Lead is responsible for disciplining and releasing shoppers who do not meet performance expectations.
  • Individual must be fully knowledgeable of all the benefits (physical, mental and economic) of ARC membership and be ready, willing and able to communicate the benefits to current and prospective members clearly and effectively.
  • The Sales and Marketing Lead develops work schedules for the sales staff each week and is careful to plan ahead monthly to ensure coverage for special events and presentations. Prepares and runs sales meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Administration

  • The Lead assists in preparing accurate and timely reports, marketing research studies and customer satisfaction surveys.

Customer Service and Collaboration

  • The Lead functions as a spokesperson for the marketing team among recreation staff and coordinates activities with all Aztec Recreation staff; including full-time staff, Lead Supervisors, and the marketing team.
  • A proactive, positive and conscientious demeanor is expected. Lead must exhibit and role model Aztec Recreation core values and ensure marketing staff create a friendly and welcoming environment.

Safety

  • Ensures all operations are conducted with safety of staff and customers as first priority, and in accordance with the Injury and Illness Prevention Plan and other safety policies
  • Adheres to Associated Students’ Code of Safe Practices

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum & Preferred Requirements

Education:

  • Must be currently enrolled at San Diego State University, taking a minimum of 6 units
  • Business, Management or Marketing student preferred
  • Work Study students preferred
  • Preferred candidate will be a returning student for at least one additional school year 

Experience:

  • Excellent communication skills, sales experience, leadership ability, public speaking experience and organizational skills preferred.
  • Ability to work well with diverse staff and customers required.
  • Knowledge and enthusiasm for recreation programs preferred.
  • Computer skills: MS Word and Excel proficiency required.

License & Certification Requirements:

  • Must have a valid current Driver’s License and driver’s insurance
  • Must be American Red Cross First Aid, CPR and AED Certified
  • Must be available 20 hours/week

SCHEDULE & WORKING CONDITIONS

  • This is a part-time (20 hours/week), Upperclassmen/Graduate-level position with expected hours to be worked during business hours of Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Year-round position.
  • Candidates must be available for summer.

General office environment. Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require standing and walking around campus. The working environment is generally favorable. Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. Work is generally performed within an office environment, with standard office equipment available.

This position requires the individual to spend long hours sitting and using office equipment and computers. This person will also spend time filing and have to do some lifting of supplies and materials from time to time, including banker boxes and files.

RELATIONSHIPS

  • Receives direction and supervision from the Aztec Recreation Marketing Coordinator. Has a supervisory responsibility for sales staff. Works with all AS/SDSU Aztec Recreation staff.
