Associated Students | San Diego State University
A Resolution in Support of San Diego State University International Programs
WHEREAS, embedded in the Associated Students of San Diego State University mission, vision, and values are ideas to support, unify, and empower San Diego State University by creating, promoting, and funding social, cultural, and recreational programs that facilitate both on and off campus interests, and
WHEREAS, San Diego State University campus initiatives include five shared visions and one of them is to create and develop San Diego State University as genuinely global university, and
WHEREAS, this shared vision is to continue to internationalize and expand the international dimensions of all aspects of learning at San Diego State University, including student and faculty exchanges, curricular development, research, scholarship, and creative endeavors, and
WHEREAS, the San Diego State University Office of International Programs, along with the International Student Center work to facilitate a full range of international programs and services to San Diego State University students, faculty, and staff, and
WHEREAS, since 1999, a total of 406 San Diego State University faculty have been awarded with grants to assist in the development of international programs , and
WHEREAS, the International Student Center offers a wide range of program options to foster student success, global perspectives, intercultural awareness, and international goodwill which advances San Diego State University as a global learning community by serving as a crossroads for students from around the world seeking educational opportunities at San Diego State University and for San Diego State University students seeking educational opportunities in other countries, and
WHEREAS, surveys have shown that students who seek education abroad are more likely to be sought out by organizations and graduate schools because of their abilities to handle ambiguity in positions of importance, take risks outside of their comfort zone, experiment, adapt, innovate, work collaboratively, and acquire unique perceptions, skills, attitudes, and values to face their fears and attain their goals, and
WHEREAS, San Diego State University has approximately 1,470 international students studying from nearly 90 countries, and
WHEREAS, the International Student Center Education Abroad Office offers more than 190 program options in 44 countries that any San Diego State University student can participate in, and
WHEREAS, the San Diego State University College of Extended Studies Travel Study Division offers an array of short term education and international abroad opportunities, including language immersion and single course focus, of which 252 San Diego State University students participated in 2003 – 2004, and
WHEREAS, San Diego State University departments, like Africana Studies, provide alternative spring break and summer options to destinations including Ghana and South Africa, and
WHEREAS, the number of San Diego State University students engaging in an education abroad experience has increased approximately 507 percent from 230 students in 1999 to 1,168 students in 2004 placing San Diego State University second in the nation in its Carnegie category of Doctoral/Research-Intensive institutions, third for all institutions in California, 29th overall in the nation, and first in the San Diego region, and
WHEREAS, the San Diego State University International Business program is ranked seventh in the nation for 2004, and
WHEREAS, San Diego State University wishes to have 30 percent of the graduating class having participated in an education abroad experience by the time they graduate in 2005 – 2006, and
WHEREAS, San Diego State University is ranked number one in the California State University system for the number of scholarships awarded to students participating in education abroad, though the demand for additional funding is imminent, and
WHEREAS, the International Student Center has encouraged organizations such as the International Student Association and others to promote internationalism among students across campus, and now therefore be it
RESOLVED, that a part of the mission of Associated Students of San Diego State University shall be to support, assist, and further promote San Diego State University’s development as a genuinely global university by outreaching to each student in its own message to encourage them to engage in international education abroad experiences, and be it further
RESOLVED, that the Associated Students of San Diego State University shall help San Diego State University’s International Programs with the continued scholarship of students actively or wishing to participate in education abroad, and be it further
RESOLVED, that the Associated Students of San Diego State University should strongly encourage San Diego State University faculty, deans, Provost, and President to help in sustaining and increasing, when possible, fiscal resources for San Diego State University's International Programs, and be it further
RESOLVED, that the Associated Students of San Diego State University strongly encourage San Diego State University faculty, departments, and programs to increase course offerings, emphases, and degree programs with international focuses, and be it further
RESOLVED, that all future efforts to further develop San Diego State University’s International Programs, which advance San Diego State University’s vision to become a genuinely global university, will be continually recognized, and be it finally
RESOLVED, that this resolution be forwarded electronically to minimize the use of paper resources to President Stephen Weber, Provost Nancy Marlin, all members of the International Programs Council, the Office of International Programs, the International Student Center, the College of Extended Studies Travel Studies Division, the Division of Academic Affairs, the Division of University Advancement, the San Diego State University Senate, the California State University Academic Senate, the California State University Chancellor’s Office, and all schools, deans, departments, programs, and related faculty and staff alike that require or strongly encourage an international education abroad experience including, but not limited to, Africana Studies, Chicano and Chicana Studies, Economics, European Studies, History, Hospitality and Tourism Management, International Business, International Security and Conflict Resolution, Latin American Studies, Political Science, Spanish, Theatre, University Honors, and Women’s Studies.
