Resolution Supporting the Pool Referendum and a New Pool

WHEREAS, the Associated Students of San Diego State University was incorporated on March 7, 1932 for the purpose of enhancing the quality of campus life, and

WHEREAS, the 70+ year historical record of the Associated Students shows consistent growth and unprecedented success at anticipating and responding to the social, cultural, recreational and academic-support needs of a dynamic and diverse University student body, and

WHEREAS, the Associated Students is a recognized leader in responsibly managing innovative and progressive campus facilities such as the Aztec Recreation Center, Cox Arena, Campus Children’s Center, Mission Bay Aquatic Center and Aztec Center that serve thousands of SDSU students every day, and

WHEREAS, SDSU has been without an on-campus swimming pool since June, 2000 that serves the needs of all students; from the health conscience lap swimmer to the novice learn-to-swim participant to the recreational swimmer and diver, and

WHEREAS, the new SDSU Swimming Pool facility will include a 50-meter pool and 7,000 sq. ft. recreation pool to provide opportunities for competition, recreation and fitness activities to a diverse generation of future students, and

WHEREAS, the new SDSU Swimming Pool facility will fully comply with all ADA regulations and standards, and

WHEREAS, the implementation of the fee to support the construction and operation of the SDSU Swimming Pool will be suspended until the pool open in 2006, and

WHEREAS, the SDSU Swimming Pool facility will improve the quality of life in the SDSU community by creating a new pool facility that will advance SDSU’s vision to be a one of the premier universities in the west, and

WHEREAS, the student-athletes on the Aztec women’s swimming, diving and waterpolo teams have endured practicing and competing in off-campus facilities and a new pool would alleviate the disadvantage of being the only Division I athletic school that travels to an off-campus pool for home practice and competitions, and

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the A.S. Council hereby endorses the SDSU swimming pool referendum and encourages a yes vote on April 14 and April 15, 2004 and directs the A.S. staff to produce pool referendum-related materials and further directs the staff to assist with a vote yes pool referendum campaign.

FURTHER, BE IT RESOLVED, that copies of this resolution shall be sent to SDSU President Stephen L. Weber, Aztec Athletic Department, the SDSU Senate, The Daily Aztec, the SDSU Alumni Association and the Campus Fee Advisory Committee.
