Shared Governance Taskforce Recommendation

Author: Jeffrey Obayashi

Shared governance is an important ongoing issue for the Associated Students and has been an AS Council key priority goal in the past years. Last fall A.S. recommended to the Senate that a shared taskforce be established to collaborate on the issue of shared governance. The Associated Students request that the taskforce address the following issues:

  • Encourage an environment where students are more actively involved with important university decisions including but not limited to: enrollment management, budgets and other policy issues that affect the student experience at SDSU.
  • Foster an environment where students feel welcome and they understand their role on the Shared Taskforce and all Senate Committees.
  • Establish an orientation program for student members of the Senate Committees.
  • Senate Committee chairs assign a committee member to mentor the student member(s) of the committee.
Strongly recommend that actions brought to Senate are forwarded for prior consultation to the AS Council (normally through the AS University Affairs Board ).
  • Create additional student seats on the University Senate.
  • Define shared governance to provide distinct, clear definitions of the roles of the student.
  • Senate Committees meet at regular, consistent times, dates and places every semester so that students can plan ahead to attend the meetings.
  • Place all committee meeting times on the Senate website and provide the A.S. Vice President of University Affairs with notice of any changes and additions.
  • Engage in consultation with the AS Vice-President of University Affairs when a committee does not have a chair or is not meeting regularly so that we can assist in resolving the situation.
  • Provide for greater inclusion of students in the reappointment, tenure, and/or promotion (RTP) process, including the ability to attend search committee meetings, and to give input into the decision-making.

We appreciate the acknowledgement of the University Senate in understanding the importance of the issue of shared governance and wish to work cooperatively with you in the future.

Approved by Associated Students Council on October 18, 2003.
