Resolution in Support of Withholding Fees from the California State Student Association

WHEREAS, San Diego State University Associated Students is the recognized voice of San Diego State students and has an obligation to uphold and protect the collective interest of its constituents; and

WHEREAS, San Diego State Associated Students currently pays dues to the California State Student Association in the amount of 60 cents per full-time equivalent student; and

WHEREAS, San Diego State University has accounted for 33,441 full-time equivalent students in Fall 2006, Associated Students henceforth owes dues in the amount of $20,065 to CSSA; and

WHEREAS, there are currently four other non-dues paying campuses within CSSA: CSU Long Beach, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Cal Poly Pomona and CSU Los Angeles; and

WHEREAS, the San Diego State University Associated Students has a been an active member in the California State Student Association (CSSA), holding several executive and special officer positions, and authoring a number of CSSA resolutions; and

WHEREAS, many AS Board of Directors have attended the CSSA conferences gaining the much needed experience to evaluate the effectiveness of the organization and our financial participation; and

WHEREAS, the primary reason for withholding our membership is the question of whether the organization can maintain a consistent and effective voice for CSU students in lieu of individual campus efforts due to ongoing concerns with the stability of CSSA and inability to take corrective actions; and

WHEREAS, as student leaders, it is our responsibility to continuously improve the effectiveness of the student voice in California; and

WHEREAS, it has come to our attention that CSSA is not addressing important questions about the value and responsibility of membership; and

WHEREAS, it is questionable whether there are tangible benefits of membership beyond eligibility for executive office and voting at monthly meetings since it is more important to do the work than hold a voting seat; and

WHEREAS, San Diego State Associated Students, specifically External Affairs, remains dedicated and committed to advocating for our students at the local, statewide and national level; therefore be it

RESOLVED, the San Diego State Associated Students will no longer be a dues paying member of CSSA; and be it further

RESOLVED, we intend to uphold our level of participation as allowed by the CSSA constitution while maintaining a non-dues paying status; and be it further

RESOLVED, the resources currently allocated for the organization shall be utilized to advocate for the students of San Diego State University, in a more effective and efficient manner on local, statewide and national levels; and finally be it

RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution will be forwarded to the California State Student Association and all other 22 California State University Associated Students Inc.
