A Resolution in Support of Senate Bill 970

Notice of Action:
Wednesday, April 28 – 3:30 p.m. – The Backdoor, Aztec Center

WHEREAS, the Associated Students of San Diego State University is the representative body, and the official voice of the students at San Diego State University; and has been entrusted to represent the best interests of our constituents, the enrolled students which make up our campus community; and

WHEREAS, it is the mission of the Associated Students to educate students on those issues that impact them, and advocate for the student perspective to the appropriate parties, which include the university administration, the local community, and the State of California; and

WHEREAS, Senate Bill 970, authored by Senator Ellen Corbett, creates a pilot program aimed at increasing voter participation by allowing for early voting at four California public colleges and universities to be determined by the Secretary of State and counties; and

WHEREAS, currently, students on college campuses have difficulty accessing polling places on election day due to class scheduling conflicts because general elections, occurring in November, land in the middle of midterms on many college campuses; and

WHEREAS, SB 970 expands accessibility for the electorate wherein students, who often may register for the first time with their college campus address or who may have re-registered as a part of a voter registration drive, will now have access to a polling place over multiple days; and

WHEREAS, research performed by the New American Foundation shows that the younger a citizen participates as a voter, the more likely that person will continue to vote in future elections; therefore be it

RESOLVED, that the Associated Students of San Diego State, seeking to ensure that students will have access to early voting polling stations, endorses Senate Bill 970, authored by Senator Corbett; and be it further

RESOLVED, that the Associated Students of San Diego State directs the AS President and Vice President of External Affairs to write a letter of support for Senate Bill 970 (Corbett) to Senator Christine Kehoe and Senator Ellen Corbett within one week of the passage of this resolution; and be it further

RESOLVED, that the Associated Students of San Diego State encourages the California State Legislature to move the bill through the legislative process and deliver it to the Governor of the State of California; and be it further

RESOLVED, that the Associated Students of San Diego State, would like San Diego State University to be one of the four campuses chosen to participate in the pilot program; and finally be it further

RESOLVED, that copies of this resolution be distributed widely, including, but not limited to, the CSU Board of Trustees, CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed, the Academic Senate CSU, CSU Campus Presidents, CSU Associated Students, the United States Student Association, California Faculty Association, the University of California Student Association, Senator Christine Kehoe, and Senator Ellen Corbett.
