A Resolution in Support of a Graduate Student Resource Lounge in the ModernSpace Project

WHEREAS, it is the duty of the Graduate Student Association to be the premier advocacy and support organization for graduate students and to voice the concerns of its members; and

WHEREAS, the mission of San Diego State University is: to provide well-balanced, high quality education for undergraduate and graduate students and to contribute to knowledge and the solution of problems through excellence and distinction in teaching, research, and service; and

WHEREAS, the Associated Students of San Diego State University is the representative body, and the official voice of more than 35,000 students at San Diego State University; and

WHEREAS, it is the mission of the Associated Students to represent, serve, and protect the collective interests of students at San Diego State University; and

WHEREAS, graduate students are 19% of the SDSU student body , and contribute to Associated Students through Student Body Association and Student Union fees; and

WHEREAS, graduate students serve an important function in the San Diego State University community by providing important research, teaching and academic excellence; and

WHEREAS, no specific central space currently exists for enhancing graduate student culture, a sense of belonging, and a sense of graduate community; and

WHEREAS, peer and colleague support are important functions of a healthy academic community, and there is currently a lack of mentor support for graduate and undergraduate students interested in graduate studies; and

WHEREAS, limited information and resources on graduate studies are available through Career Services and Graduate and Research Affairs, and

WHEREAS, furloughs have created a time constraint on varying departments, causing early closures and making it difficult for graduate and undergraduate students to locate information; and

WHEREAS, the graduate students on campus have a need for access to services outside of the normal work hours and a space to feel included and appreciated; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, that Associated Students will commit to creating a Graduate Student Resource Center in the Modern Space project; and let it be

RESOLVED, that the Graduate Student Association wants to work with Associated Students to design and create a formal Graduate Student Center that provides resources and education related to graduate studies to all members of the San Diego State community; and let it be

RESOLVED, that this resolution is to be distributed widely including, but not limited to, the San Diego State University President Stephen L. Weber, San Diego State University Facilities & Planning, the San Diego States University Division of Student Affairs, the San Diego State Graduate and Research Affairs Office, Chancellor Charles B. Reed and to the Board of Trustees of California State University system, and the California State Assembly and Senate.
