A Resolution in Support of the Principles Underpinning the March 4th Statewide Day of Action

WHEREAS, the Associated Students of San Diego State University (SDSU) is the single recognized voice for the approximately 29,500 students at San Diego State University; and

WHEREAS, the mission of Associated Students of SDSU is to support the mission of San Diego State University and to create, promote and fund social, recreational, cultural, and educational programs and facilities both on campus and in the community, advocate for student interests and provide leadership opportunities and participate in shared governance; and

WHEREAS, the Donahue Act (Master Plan for Higher Education), passed into law in 1960, promised accessibility, quality, and affordability, ensuring that all qualified students were able to attend college regardless of their socioeconomic background; and

WHEREAS, each dollar invested in the CSU yields a $4.62 return into the economy; and

WHEREAS, systemwide fees at CSU and University of California (UC) campuses between 2000 and 2008 have more than doubled for students and their families; and

WHEREAS, an unprecedented 40,000 qualified students at the CSU and 250,000 students at the California Community Colleges (CCC) may be denied access within the current and next academic year; and

WHEREAS, more than 800 students, unionists and activists from more than 50 cities across California gathered at UC Berkeley on October 24, 2009 to issue a call for a March 4, 2010 Statewide Day of Action to “save public education;” therefore, let it be

RESOLVED, that Associated Students of SDSU supports the ideal behind the March 4th Day of Action pertaining to the restoration of funds to the CSU, UC, and CCC; and let it be further

RESOLVED, that Associated Students of SDSU urges the California Legislature to restore adequate funding to the CSU system in accordance with the Master Plan for Higher Education to meet the needs of students in California now and in the future; and let it be further

RESOLVED, that Associated Students of SDSU encourages all student organizations to use constructive protest methods that improve the academic and campus environments; and let it be further

RESOLVED, that Associated Students of SDSU recommends that all student organizations seek consultation regarding the impact on students prior to any event that could have an adverse effect on the academic environment; and let it be finally

RESOLVED, that copies of this resolution be distributed widely, including, but not limited to, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, the CSU Board of Trustees; CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed; the Academic Senate CSU; CSU University Presidents; CSU Associated Students organizations; the United States Student Association; the University of California Student Association; and the Student Senate of the California Community Colleges.
