A Resolution Condemning the Koala's Illicit Article Inciting Rape

WHEREAS, the Associated Students of San Diego State University is the representative body, and the official voice of the students of San Diego State University; and

WHEREAS, it is the mission of the Associated Students to support the mission of San Diego State University and to create, promote and fund social, recreational, cultural, and educational programs and facilities both on campus and in the community, advocate for student interests and provide leadership opportunities and participate in shared governance; and

WHEREAS, the Associated Students values the right to the Constitutional First Amendment Freedom of Speech, whether the Associated Students agrees or disagrees with what is being said or expressed, believing that it enhances education and life in general, creating an open and diverse society; and

WHEREAS, the Koala at San Diego State University is a print and online media organization that provides an anonymous forum for a wide-range of ideas and viewpoints in addition to its articles; and

WHEREAS, the Koala at San Diego State University has the right to express its viewpoints and those of its readers; and

WHEREAS, the aforementioned right ceases when the editorial or commentary incites illegal activities, such as rape, as in the article on page five (5) of the November 2009 issue of the Koala at San Diego State University, diagramming how to rape, when to rape, who to rape, and how to get away with raping a woman; therefore be it

RESOLVED, that Panhellenic Association at San Diego State University condemns this cruel and hateful article; and be it further

RESOLVED, that Panhellenic Association at San Diego State University demands the immediate retraction of this article, along with an apology; and be it further

RESOLVED, that Panhellenic Association at San Diego State University demands that educational efforts to dismantle stereotypes and work with diverse communities to prevent sexual assault and rape be funded by the Koala; and be it further

RESOLVED, that Panhellenic Association at San Diego State University demands that a look at prevention and security efforts to prevent rape be made by San Diego State University, and, if necessary, adjust such efforts to reach all students on campus; and be it further

RESOLVED, that copies of this resolution be distributed widely, including, but not limited to, the writers and editors of the Koala at San Diego State University, Associated Students of San Diego State University, President Stephen Weber of San Diego State University, Vice President of Student Affairs James Kitchen of San Diego State University, CSU Board of Trustees, CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed, CSU Campus Presidents, CSU Associated Students, the United States Student Association, the University of California Student Association, Senator Barbara Boxer, Senator Diane Feinstein, and Congresswoman Susan Davis, San Diego State University Chief of Police John Browning, Mid City Chief of Police William Lansdowne, Partners of the P.R.I.CE. Coalition: San Diego Center for Community Solutions (CCS), Women’s Resource Center of Oceanside, and the District Attorney’s Office.
