A Resolution in Response to the Governor's 2011/12 Budget

WHEREAS, the Associated Students of San Diego State University is the representative body, and the official voice of the students at San Diego State University; and has been entrusted to represent the best interests of our constituents, the enrolled students which make up our campus community; and

WHEREAS, it is the mission of the Associated Students to represent, serve and protect the collective interests of the approximately 33,790 students at San Diego State University; and

WHEREAS, the California State University System and San Diego State University provide higher learning opportunities and access to low-income and middle-class residents of California so they may obtain well-paying jobs after earning a degree; and

WHEREAS, the California State University System is the economic engine that drives the State’s economy by producing graduates in the fields of Gerontology (100%), Criminal Justice (90%), Nursing (64%), Teacher Education (55%), and Agriculture (53%); and

WHEREAS, every $1 invested in the California State University System yields a $5.43[1] return back into the California economy; and

WHEREAS, due to the five-fold return created by the California State University System, budget cuts to the university system will further weaken the state of California, making it more difficult to recover; and

WHEREAS, the Governor’s proposal cuts the California State University System by $500 million and calls for a 10% increase in the fall 2011and a 5% fee increase in the spring 2012; and

WHEREAS, the proposed budget reductions and increase in tuition fees will reduce California State University System enrollment, thereby denying access to qualified California residents; be it

RESOLVED, that the Associated Students of San Diego State University will actively work to generate public support for investing in higher education; and be it further

RESOLVED, that while the Associated Students of San Diego State University recognizes that the California State University System is one of the most efficient higher education systems in the nation,[2] Associated Students will actively work to identify further opportunities and innovative practices to enhance efficiency within administrative operations and academic technology; and let it be further

RESOLVED, that the Associated Students of San Diego State University urges the Governor, the Assembly, and the Senate to remember California’s priorities and to invest in the California State University System and seek ways to fully fund higher education in order to protect the future of California by preserving access, quality, and affordability of the California State University System; thus be it finally

RESOLVED, that this resolution be distributed widely including, but not limited, to statewide student associations, campus associated students, Academic Senate CSU, CSU Board of Trustees, Chancellor Charles B. Reed, the California legislature, and Office of the Governor of California.
