A Resolution in Support of SDSU's Current Shared Governance Model

WHEREAS, the Associated Students (A.S.) of San Diego State University (SDSU) is the official representative body, and the voice of SDSU’s more than 30,000 students; and is entrusted to represent the best interests of our constituents; and

WHEREAS, it is the mission of the A.S. to educate students on issues that impact them, and advocate for the student perspective to the appropriate parties, which include the university administration and faculty, and government representatives and agencies on the local, statewide and national levels; and

WHEREAS,  the California State University (CSU) Board of Trustees has affirmed the opportunity for students to have an impact on the development of university policies and procedures that have or will have an effect on current and future students is vital to the well-being and life of a university; and

WHEREAS, the CSU Board of Trustees has further determined that the associated student body organizations established at each university in the CSU system, as provided by Education Code Section 89300, shall serve as the official representative body of the students of their campus, and that the University Presidents will provide these officially recognized associated student body organizations an opportunity to offer opinions and make recommendations about campus policy and procedures that have or will have an effect upon students; and

WHEREAS, the SDSU University Senate is the deliberative body that coordinates the perspective of the faculty with that of the students, staff, and administration; and its Constitution states, “SDSU shall perform its educational mission guided by the principles of shared governance;” and

WHEREAS, SDSU has enjoyed a longstanding tradition and history of successful shared governance and cooperation since 1971; and

WHEREAS, shared governance at SDSU is a vital system that demonstrates mutual respect, shared responsibility, accountability, and a collaborative partnership between A.S., the Senate, and the University Administration throughout the decision-making process; and 

WHEREAS, SDSU takes pride in its shared governance model, in particular the strong tradition of student representation in University and administrative decision-making processes; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED,  the A.S. reaffirms commitment to enhancing its long lasting tradition of participating in shared governance in order to strengthen the relationship between every student on campus and the University Administration; and be it further 

RESOLVED,  A.S. will continue to work with the administration and the Senate to provide input and opinions on issues that affect SDSU characterized by respect, understanding, communication and compromise towards all parties involved in the decision making process; and be it further

RESOLVED, that A.S. affirms this resolution serves as a standing symbol of the students’ commitment to the principles of shared governance held by the students of SDSU, The University Senate and the University President; and be it further

RESOLVED,  that copies of this resolution be distributed widely, including, but not limited to, SDSU President Dr. Elliot Hirshman, CSU Board of Trustees, CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed, CSU Campus Presidents, CSU Associated Students, the United States Student Association, California Faculty Association, University of California Student Association, SDSU University Senate, and the California State Student Association.
