A Resolution Urging the University Senate to Support the Creation of an Online Wait List System

WHEREAS, the Associated Students (AS) of San Diego State University (SDSU) is the official representative body and the single recognized voice of the approximately 30,000 students at SDSU and is entrusted to represent the best interests of our constituents; and

WHEREAS, it is the mission of the AS to represent, serve, and protect the collective interests and values of students at SDSU; and

WHEREAS, the mission of SDSU is to provide a well-balanced, high quality education to undergraduate and graduate students and to contribute to knowledge and the solution of problems through excellence and distinction in teaching, research, and service; and

WHEREAS, as reflected in the Impaction and Enrollment Management Section of the University Senate Policy File1, Item 1.0 states “SDSU shall be committed to providing qualified students with the greatest possible access to excellent higher education”; and

WHEREAS, as reflected in the Impaction and Enrollment Management Section of the University Senate Policy File1, Item 3.0 states “Enrollment strategies shall evolve with the consultation of the various constituencies”, and

WHEREAS, an online wait list system will enhance the academic and overall experience at SDSU by providing the campus community with a more efficient and fair registration process of students being added to a class when it becomes full; and

WHEREAS, 21 of the 23 CSU’s, with the exception of CSU Northridge and SDSU, have implemented an online wait list system; and

WHEREAS, the SDSU School of Communication has successfully implemented a manual wait list system; and

WHEREAS, an online wait list system will continuously inform students of their registration status enabling them to be more proactive and successful with their academic planning and personal scheduling; and

WHEREAS, according to the Online Wait List Student Survey created and conducted in partnership with the AS University Affairs Board and Enrollment Services, more than 4 out of 5 students surveyed support the implementation of an online wait list system; and

WHEREAS, an online wait list system will provide a more accountable tracking system for the demand and necessity of additional classes; and

WHEREAS, online wait list systems have reported to significantly reduce the interactions (i.e. face-to-face, e-mail, etc.) between the faculty and the students to add a class when it becomes full which will result in more instruction time; and

WHEREAS, the creation of an online wait list system will prevent students from reserving seats for other students which will allow for a more fair registration process; therefore be it

RESOLVED, the AS of SDSU supports the creation of an online wait list system where students will be prioritized and added to a wait list as space becomes available during and after the registration process; and further be it

RESOLVED, the AS urges the University Senate to consider the numerous benefits of an online wait list system for the campus community and to support and execute the creation of an online wait list system; and further be it

RESOLVED, in collaboration with the University, the AS shall be actively involved with the creation and marketing of an online wait list system; and further be it

RESOLVED, this resolution be distributed widely including, but not limited to, the University Senate, President Elliot Hirshman, Provost Nancy Marlin, Deans and the Assistant Deans of the Colleges, Enrollment Services Administration, and the Center for Teaching and Learning within the Division of Undergraduate Studies, and the CSU Board of Trustees.
