I. CALL TO ORDER

A.S. Vice President of University Affairs,Sandy Mekany, called the meeting to order at 3:35 p.m.

II.  ROLL CALL

III.  APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA

It was moved and seconded to approve the agenda for the September 7th meeting.

VI.  PRESENTATIONS AND UNIVERSITY REPORTS

  1. University Senate Designee (Marissa Vasquez): On behalf of Beth, who read a report from Marissa: Expressed apologies for being absent and also expressed how excited they are to work with the council. Reflected on a great meeting with the executive officers.. 
  2. University Vice President for Student Affairs and Campus Diversity Designee (Christine Molina): Gave a brief introduction and expressed excitement for the upcoming year. 
  3. Enrollment Update - Stefan Hyman, Associate Vice President of Enrollment (Time Certain 4 p.m.)
    Stefan Hyman presented enrollment data and shared their division goals for the upcoming year. 

VII.  ITEMS FOR CONSIDERATION

  1. General Consent Agenda (Action) - None.
  2. General Consent Report (Information) - None.
  3. Campus Governance Committees (Information) - Sandy Mekany, A.S. Vice President of University Affairs, and Beth Bridges, A.S. Shared Governance Assistant
    Beth Bridges, A.S. Shared Governance Assistant, presented on shared governance committees and the University Senate Committees . ASUC members completed a University Senate Committees interest form. ASUC members are required to attend a University Senate as part of their responsibilities. 

VIII.  REPORTS OF UNIVERSITY COUNCIL MEMBERS

  1. Sandy Mekany, Vice President of University Affairs: 
    • Expressed joy for everyone being here, also gave a motivational talk about how much effort you put into this position is what you will get out of it, also informing the ASUC members that they have a great deal of power for advocacy in their positions. 
    • The University Affairs Board (UAB): will meet every Thursday from 2-3 p.m. Your Voice Matters (YVM) Push Week will be October 3-7 which is being planned right now, the conversations to plan YVM occur during UAB meetings. 
    • Met with Amanda Fuller regarding student concerns about EAB
    • Navigate with two student leaders.
    • Met with the advisor for IS3D with Jordan Valdez discussed increased opportunities for students.
    • The College Council retreat has moved to October 1.
  2. Shawki Moore, President: 
    • The first Senate meeting has occurred and will occur monthly.  
    • There are certain categories of student fees that go through the Campus Fee Advisory Committee (CFAC) committee; there has been an increase in proposals to implement more fees on students. 
    • There will be a University Leaders Reception at the University House on September 21 at 5:30 p.m. There will be carpooling after ASUC to the event.  This will be a great opportunity to meet different University leaders and enjoy great food. 
  3. Meena Alexander, Executive Vice President: 
    • To sign up for the Walk Around Presentation you can use the link in the A.S. chat via Linktree. 
    • There are several open positions for representatives, the application has been posted and will close September 16th at 4:00 p.m, the open positions can be found on the Associated Students website. 
    • The Your Mental Health Matters application is opening on Thursday September 8th, please join, if interested. 
  4. Robson Winter, Vice President of External Relations:
    • External Relations Board (ERB) had their first meeting of the year, the committee is dedicating time to Rock the Vote planning. 
      There is a Constitution day event coming up on September 14 from 12-1 p.m. in the Student Union courtyard, there will be opportunities for students to register to vote, students will be able to win merchandise at this event. RTV is interested in doing a lot of tabeling this year, if interested in helping out please contact Robson Winter. 
    • California State Student Association (CSSA) is coming up where Robson, Sandy, and Shawki will attend. A.S. a social media account has an Alicia Keys concert ticket giveaway. please help the giveaway by sharing to help increase A.S. followers. 
  5. Sophia Koch, Vice President of Financial Affairs: 
    • Have been meeting with the Assistant Deans with Sandy and Carlos Careaga to share college council budget information. As a reminder banking training is required for all college councils. 
    • The Financial Affairs Committee (FAC) meets every Monday so if you are interested please join. 
    • Aztecs Rock Hunger will be utilizing Cashapp instead of Venmo this year.
  6. Christina Brown, Executive Director: 
    • It was lovely getting to know everyone at the retreat, feel free to come hang out in the A.S. suite. 
    • On Friday, October 7, there will be a Celebration with A.S. Alumni from the past decades. This event will include the grand opening of the ARC, Aztec Recreation Center (ARC) 25th year anniversary, and A.S. 90 year celebration. Associated Students will be able to attend this event for free, any student guest will be a $35 cost and non-student guest will be a $75 cost.
    • The ARC is now fully open and includes the basketball courts. Intramural sports teams are back up and functioning at 100%.
    • Advises Graduate Student Association (GSA). Please recruit one graduate student per college to join the GSA. The GSA will be meeting every other Monday at 6 p.m., in a hybrid format. 
  7. Brandon Bartosh, ASBOD Student-At-Large:
    • Provided a detailed A.S. funding presentation as well as information about financial training. 
  8. Ava Walker, ASBOD Student-At-Large: 
    • There has been an approved pilot program that will allow student leaders to both volunteer and work for Associated Students, when originally students could only do one or the other. 
  9. Grace DeVega, ASBOD Student-At-Large:
    • Grace is working with Robson, Sandy, and the Provost regarding Election Say, specifically allowing students enough time to go vote. The goal is to lessen schoolwork, exams, and advocating for potentially having time off on election day to promote voting. If there is any interest to get involved in this effort please do so. 
  10. College of Arts and Letters (CAL) Council: 
    • CAL hosted a representative from the undergraduate research department, they talked about how students can access research opportunities. It is also a great way to gain professional development and build a resume. 
    • There was also recommended coordinating research training opportunities with other college councils. 
  11. Fowler College of Business Council:
    • The first meeting the Fowler College of Business Council hosted an introductory meeting; some RSO’s were absent from their college meeting. 
    • There will be a Business Organization Expo on Campanile from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. on September 13 along with a STEM career and internship fair for the entire university students. 
  12. College of Education Student Council:
    • The first meeting of the College of Education Student Council was last week. Nine registered student organizations (RSO) registered this year which is an improvement from four organizations last year. 
    • Multiple RSO’s were expressing interest in football tailgate collaborations. 
  13. College of Engineering Student Council:
    • There was an Engineering Club Fair held on campus a few weeks ago. 
  14. College of Health and Human Services Student Council (CHHSCC):
    • There will be a heart and stroke walk on October 17. CHHS has a team at the walk, all students are welcome to participate and everyone gets a Tee-shirt for participating. 
    • CHHS is in the process of organizing a RSO fair. 
    • CHHS has also set up office hours for organizations that cannot make it to the biweekly meetings on Thursdays from 2:30-3:30 p.m.
  15. College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts (PSFA) Student Council: 
    • There is a Donuts with the Dean event on Thursday September 15th. The purpose of this is for an open forum and to give students an opportunity to meet the Dean of PSFA.
    • They are encouraging collaboration between their RSO’s. The website is now running as well as the PSFA council Instagram. 
  16. College of Sciences Student Council (CSSC): 
    • The first official meeting was on September 7th, they have lots of new RSO’s joining the council. They are in the process of organizing a STEM club table expo as well as the lab coat initiative and discussing funding for said initiative.
    • There is one vacant spot in the College of Science representative position and there will be a council retreat next Wednesday. 
  17. Graduate Student Association (GSA): No report.
  18. Undeclared College Council (UCC): 
    • During the first meeting they went over officers’ roles and expectations, and their freshman liaison application is open.

IX.  ANNOUNCEMENTS

  1. Shawki Moore posed a question to ASUC members to get their opinion about an intramural basketball team.
  2. Nina informed us that Dance Marathon’s first week will be September 14.
  3. The Tijuana Home Build meets every Thursday from 7-8 p.m.
  4. George informed us that homecoming court nominations are available and they will be due September 20.
