Aztecs Rock Hunger
On October 17th, SDSU will start rocking hunger! 15% of San Diegans face “food insecurity,” which means that little or no food is available at home and 138,000 are children. The Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank combats hunger by serving 370,000 San Diegans each month. For every $1 donated, the food bank can purchase 6 lbs. of food for hungry San Diegans, including fresh produce, a welcomed, healthy alternative. Our goal this year is to collect 400,000 pounds of food and with your help, SDSU can do it!
There are FIVE easy ways to donate, including:
- Donate on the virtual pantry at sdsu.edu/aztecsrockhunger (beginning October 17th)
- Make a financial contribution at any Campus Market or Starbucks
- Place non-perishable food in the red bins throughout campus
- Make a donation at the Oct. 21st and Nov. 5th Aztec football games
- Donate to Aztec Proud
20% of cash proceeds will benefit students with food insecurities right here on campus. Thank you for making a difference in San Diegans’ lives!

A.S.’s Freestyle Flying Disc Champion, Amy Schiller
Amy Schiller, Aztec Recreation Marketing Coordinator, recently took home the Women's Pairs World Title of Freestyle Flying Disc (aka Frisbee®). The competition took place in in Brooklyn, New York August 3 - 6, 2016 with over 80 competitors from the U.S. and Europe. There are four divisions: Open Pairs, Open Coop, Mixed Pairs and Women's Pairs. Competitors perform four-minute routines choreographed to music and are judged in three categories; difficulty, execution and presentation. Amy won with partner, Lori Daniels, from Kailua, HI in their performance to Lorde's "Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” "It was a sweet victory for me," says Schiller, "The last time I won women's division was over 10 years ago. To win, you need to know how to plan and choreograph, have high difficulty, practice with your partner and complete solid execution during the competitive rounds. Sometimes it works out."
Amy started playing sport club college Ultimate at the University of Illinois. Ultimate is a team disc sport and, at that time, many ultimate players also competed in other disc disciplines including disc golf, freestyle, distance and guts. "The players in Chicago were skilled at all disciplines and that's who taught and motivated me," she says. She began competing in overall in the late 1980s and in the 1990s successfully set two women's world disc throwing records in distance and self-caught flight. She still has the women's self-caught world record at 11.81 seconds. "It was a perfect wind at UCSC that day in 1991," says Schiller, “but I also threw at the field every day throughout the competition to figure that wind out.” In 1990 Amy won the world disc golf, freestyle, and overall Women’s World titles. Her ultimate team, San Diego Safari, took 2nd at nationals that year. She says, “It was my chance to win all the top spots for a woman in disc sports - so close!"
Despite the successes and records in power throwing, Schiller began to focus on Freestyle. She met and married Dave Schiller, a freestyle specialist. Amy says, "We got serious about competing together in 1994. Shortly after, we got serious about a lot more." Together, Dave and Amy have won 7 world titles in the freestyle mixed pairs division.
In July 1996, both Dave and Amy were cast in a national Jeep® TV commercial. "It was a pinnacle experience," says Schiller. "We both earned parts through auditions that the ad agency organized through Wham-O®. We filmed in the Yukon Territory outside of Dawson City and it was summer, so the sun never set. Later, it was amazing to see the commercial running during pro sports games and the money wasn't too bad either."
In the video, Dave is wearing the hat. Yes, those are their voices. No, Amy didn’t drive in the Yukon – it was her stunt double.
When asked about her ability to win despite her age Schiller says, "I feel very fortunate to be involved in the sport of freestyle disc and it's almost unreal to win another title! It's been amazing to travel to Europe to play, compete and meet younger players who have started playing in the last 10 years. We call ourselves "The Jammily" derived from the term "jam" which is what we call just playing for fun. We are a diverse bunch and we take care of each other and adore one another just like family."
