Aztecs Rock Hunger Continues
FIVE easy ways to donate
Help us reach our goal of 300,000 pounds of food for Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank.
Aztecs Rock Hunger continues through November 15th. You can help the 370,000 San Diegans who face “food insecurity,” which means that little or no food is available at home and 138,334 of those San Diegans are children.
Every $1 donated = 6 lbs. of food for hungry San Diegans!
There are FIVE easy ways to donate, including:
- Make a monetary donation at sdsu.edu/aztecsrockhunger
- Make a financial contribution at any Aztec Market
- Place non-perishable food in the red bins throughout campus
- Make a donation at the Nov. 14th Aztec football game
- Donate to Aztec Proud at the SDSU Bookstore
PLUS: 10% of cash proceeds will benefit students with food insecurities right here on campus.
Thank you for making a difference in San Diegans’ lives!

15 Questions
Jay Harn, Daily Aztec General Manager
What is your name and title?
Jay Harn, Daily Aztec general manager.
Which A.S. department do you work in?
The Daily Aztec. I coach, teach, mentor and advise The Daily Aztec student staff -- advertising sales executives, editors, reporters and office staff.
How long have you worked for A.S.?
A little more than two years.
What was the last movie you saw? Thumbs up or thumbs down?
The War Room, a powerful movie with a powerful message. Definitely thumbs up!
If you won $5 million what would you do with it?
Probably have some fun, pay for my kids’ education, set aside some money for charity, and then bail out at least one needy newspaper.
What is your favorite dessert? And why?
Traditional frozen custard. If you have to ask why you have never had it.
Which three people (living or dead) you would like to have dinner with? And why?
Washington, Jefferson and Adams. I am an American history buff and would love to hear the story of the founding of this nation first hand.
What city would you most like to visit or visit again? And why?
Washington D.C., I love the history, love politics and have some special memories from there. When my wife and I just started dating, we both attended a conference in D.C. We had our first kiss in front of the Lincoln Memorial. To this day I can’t look at the back of a $5 bill without smiling.
Would you rather build a sandcastle or a snowman? And why?
I am just not a sand guy. I always say I love the beach except for the sand. Everyone in my family knows that they can’t get in my car after a day at the beach with so much as one speck of sand on them. So I would have to say snowman -- especially after this exceptionally hot summer.
What is your favorite book? And why?
Can’t really say just one. I am a big David McCullough fan -- I love his historical books. Loved 1776 and John Adams. Right now I am reading The Wright Brothers and all I can say is he has done it again.
What type of pets do you have and what are their names?
My family has two dogs, Cookie, an older chocolate lab and Fritz, a young black “schnoodle” (miniature schnauzer and poodle mix). Definitely the odd couple, but they are best buds and it is hysterical to watch them hang out together!
Do you like to cook and what is your specialty?
In our house, my wife cooks the healthy stuff and I cook the comfort food. I make a mean meatloaf and mashed potatoes. I grew up in the Midwest so what can I say, I love meat and potatoes.
“Most people don’t know that I like to…”
…collect newspapers from all over the nation and world. I have been doing this since I was in high school. Whenever a friend or relative goes traveling I always ask them to bring a local newspaper back. My collection got a little too big a few years back so I had to get rid of some, but I kept the best ones and I am always replenishing it.
When you visit the Zoo, which animal do you make sure you see, and why?
My mother-in-law gives our family San Diego Zoo passes each year. We love Safari Park and we especially enjoy the “Cheetah Run.” You really get an up close sense of the speed of these animals – 0 to 70 mph in four seconds is pretty cool to watch.
What was or is your favorite subject in school? And why?
I was a journalism major in college. I knew that I would be a newspaper guy ever since I was an 11-year-old paper boy for my hometown newspaper and always ended up reading what I was delivering. I am passionate about journalism and have been blessed to report, write, edit, and manage at both dailies and weeklies – and even got to own a few my own weeklies in East County in the 1990s. I always like to tell the DA staff that there is no more noble profession than journalism.
If you could have a superhero power what would it be? And why?
Hey I am a newspaper guy, so the Clark Kent/Superman thing has always been pretty cool to me – and being able to fly would sure make the morning commute easier!
What is your favorite candy? And why?
Any and all chocolate as my waistline now shows. When my kids were little my wife and I would sort their Halloween candy after they went trick-or-treating to make sure all were “okay.” We would have them empty all their candy into one big pile and go through it with them saying one for you, one for mommy and one for daddy. When my kids got older they were surprised to realize that other kids did not have to share their candy equally with their parents. What can I say, I love chocolate and parental authority can and does have some unique perks.
What is one of your favorite things to do on the SDSU campus?
I like to joke with the DA staff that I am a lonely Coke guy on a Pepsi campus. But I do know where that one Coke machine is at the trolley station. Nothing like taking that long walk to the station from the DA offices in EBA on a hot day and then coming back drinking an ice cold Coke and knowing that you are one of only a few lucky ones!

National Sandwich Day
We invite you to bite into your favorite sandwich, for today is National Sandwich Day. Sandwiches are a daily luncheon staple for millions of Americans. The annals of English history report that John Montagu was the 4th Earl of Sandwich. Among other things, the 4th Earl of Sandwich was a heavy gambler. Montagu often spent many long hours in London's gambling parlors. In 1762, he created the sandwich, by putting meat between two pieces of bread. This allowed him to remain at the gambling table for long periods of time. Obviously, the sandwich was named after him.
