Rock Hunger!
FIVE easy ways to donate
Starting October 22nd, SDSU will start rocking hunger! 15% of San Diegans face “food insecurity,” which means that little or no food is available at home and 138,334 are children. The Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank combats hunger by serving 370,000 San Diegans each month. For every $1 donated, the food bank can purchase 6 lbs. of food for hungry San Diegans, including fresh produce, a welcomed, healthy alternative. Our goal this year is to collect 300,000 pounds of food and with your help, SDSU can do it!
There are FIVE easy ways to donate, including:
- Donate on the virtual pantry at sdsu.edu/aztecsrockhunger (beginning October 22nd)
- Make a financial contribution at any Aztec Market
- Place non-perishable food in the red bins throughout campus
- Make a donation at the Oct. 23rd and Nov. 14th Aztec football games
- Donate to Aztec Proud at the SDSU Bookstore
10% of cash proceeds will benefit students with food insecurities right here on campus.
Thank you for making a difference in San Diegans’ lives!

Jin Salamack, MBAC
What is your name and title?
Jin Salamack, 22-year-old Senior at SDSU, Graphic Design Major, Surfing & Stand Up Paddling Instructor
Which A.S. department do you work in?
I work at MBAC. This facility has the biggest and kindest family of workers. I love the atmosphere, teaching ENS courses and spreading the aloha spirit to future shredders.
How long have you worked for A.S.?
I have worked for A.S. for over 3 years, which includes my one year at Montezuma Publishing and my 2+ years at MBAC
If you won $5 million what would you do with it?
Good Question. I would put $2 million to invest in my clothing brand “Journey On” and go on epic adventures to surf the biggest waves and skateboard the world. The rest — I’d give it away.
Which three people (living or dead) you would like to have dinner with?
Woody Brown (invented the first catamaran, great grandfather) to hear his radical stories of his life, Mark Hoppus (Blink 182 bassist) to hear untold stories about the upbringing of their San Diego based band, and my best bud Del who passed away due to Crohn’s Disease, to talk about skateboarding and reminisce about the past.
What city would you most like to visit or visit again?
The city/town of Wailuku, Maui. Home will never get old to me, where my friends, family, and favorite record store Request Records resides.
Who is your favorite singer / musician / musical group?
Blink 182, Ekolu, & Forever Came Calling; Blink because they influenced my Punk band “Wano” to start. Ekolu made my days as my post-surf session hometown heroes. Forever Came Calling, because their music influenced me in the hardest of times and were actually (in person) there for me as friends.
What is your favorite book?
“Between a Rock and a Hard Place” by Aron Ralston. True story of pure passion and will to survive. A strive for adventure and journeying on.
What is your favorite sports team or who is your favorite individual athlete?
Kai Lenny, Pro-surfer, Watermen X3 World Standup Paddle Champion, Big Wave Surfer. He was my classmate and friend growing up in Maui and to see him get this far in life has pushed me to pursue my biggest passions for example skateboarding the State of California (I got from the Mexico border to San Francisco, Golden Gate Bridge).
What do you want to be when you grow up?
Working with/at Topshelf Records doing graphic design, working or having worked at Sector 9 Skateboards, making my way into Big Wave Surfing, playing in my punk band Wano and having the ability to travel the world doing my passions and along the way finding new ones.
Do you like to cook and what is your specialty?
Ohh yeahh. Grilled fish and veggies if I’m on a date and good ol’ spam musubi, to relive my home cooked ono grinds.
“Most people don’t know that I like to…”
“…mosh, crowd surf, play in a punk band, skimboard, bodyboard, bodysurf, backpack, rock climb, cliff jump, and make merchandise for pop-punk bands.”
When you visit the Zoo, which animal do you make sure you see?
Tortoise, they’ve got a knack for cabbage and they get to enjoy life in the slowest motion, which is pretty epic.
What was or is your favorite subject/class in school?
Screen Printing. You get to be handy, drink a bunch of coffee to keep you up in the studio printing posters and band tees till 4am, what more can I ask for. And my professors in the graphic design majors are epically amazing artists and people.
Who is your favorite actor or actress?
Emile Hirsch: “Into the Wild” and “Lords of Dogtown” (Can I say more? Maybe, “The Girl Next Door”). His acting styles throw you from one side of the room to the other.
