SDSU Children’s Center
Below is a letter from a parent, sharing her feelings about the teachers and staff of the SDSU Children’s Center as her children prepared to “graduate” from the Center.
“How do you describe ‘home’? And how do you describe the kind of trust you give someone in order to leave your precious babies with her/him? That kind of trust and the qualities that make a home are what I’ve found in the Children’s Center. I have loved every minute of my time — and my children’s time — here. Really.
“I have learned answers to difficult parenting questions. I’ve learned how to better listen to my children. I’ve learned how children can develop by exploring answers to their own questions. I’ve met my very best friends at the Children’s Center. My children have met their very best friends at the Children’s Center.
“My children honor others because they have been treated with respect and they’ve learned what ‘respecting others’ truly means. They have a strong foundation with which to meet the world because of the love and philosophy of the Children’s Center.
“By being a board member, I have learned what serving ‘every child’ means. I understand how carefully this administrative team considers every single decision and the impact such decisions will have on children and families. This staff never takes decisions lightly.
“I love how the Center utilizes the greater SDSU campus and helps the children explore the richness of a liberal arts experience. I’ve also learned children create incredible works of art.
“I love how the master teachers and supervising teachers are experts in child development and how willing they are to discuss my children with me. I love how energetic and loving the part-time teachers are. I love how Miss Laurie gives me recipes from the kitchen that my child particularly likes. I love how the bookkeeper loves the children, not the numbers.
“I am so sad to leave the Children’s Center. My family is so sad to leave the Center. But I know that our leaving creates a new place for another family who will grow and love the Center, just as we have.
“Thank you, Children’s Center.”
- Lanie L., parent of 2 children who attended the SDSU Children’s Center

15 Questions
Jake Siegfried, Aquaplex Manager
What is your name and title?
Jake Siegfried, Aquaplex Manager
Which A.S. department do you work in? Describe your job in 25 words or less.
Aztec Recreation - I manage the facility, programs, and events that run at the Aquaplex.
How many years have you worked for A.S.?
I have been with A.S. and Aztec Recreation almost five years. (June 2011)
What was the last movie you saw? Thumbs up or thumbs down?
The last movie I saw was “Unbroken”. I’d say thumbs up. A great story of human spirit, and a powerful film. I wish I would have read the book first.
If you won $5 million what would you do with it?
I’d like to think that I would do something fun with a large amount of the money but realistically I would just pay bills and invest in the future. Maybe travel a little bit.
What city would you most like to visit or visit again?
Anywhere in Hawaii. My wife is from there and we’ve visited several times together over the years. Every time we go I’m always in awe of the beauty of the landscape and culture. My favorite island is Maui. I love the laid back scene in Lahaina, even though it’s a little touristy.
What is your favorite ride at an amusement park?
I’m not much for amusement parks because of the crowds but I like the rollercoasters that make you feel like you’re flying. Something about seeing the ground below and moving with speed is so exciting. As I’ve gotten older I still like to go but can’t ride those things as much.
Would you rather build a sandcastle or a snowman?
This one’s tricky. I don’t like the cold and being an avid surfer you’d think that it would be sandcastle but it’s not. As much as I love the beach and ocean, I don’t like sand so I’d rather build a snowman. I just want to be able to warm up when I’m done.
What is your favorite book?
“West of Jesus” by Steven Kotler. I loved the way he was able to break down everyday actions and go into the biology behind beliefs and passion. I’ve read it a couple of times and always find something else that I am able to connect with.
What is your favorite sports team or who is your favorite individual athlete?
I’m not a big professional sports fan so my favorite teams are of course the Aztecs. My family and I have been going to games regularly since I was a child. If I had to pick one athlete as my favorite, I would say surfer Rob Machado. He’s a local (San Diego) and someone with an extremely positive view on life. He’s someone whose style and passion has motivated me through my life.
What type of pets do you have and what are their names?
My wife and I have a lab/pit pull mix dog named Kai (it’s Hawaiian for ocean) who is terrified of water.
What three things are always in your refrigerator?
My wife loves to cook so our frige is always full of food (mostly left overs and/or takeout) but other than that you can always find Yogurt (Strawberry), Spam and Rice and Pacifico.
If you could go back or forward in time, where would you go?
I think going forward in time would be cool to see all the new gadgets but I’d prefer to travel back in time. I would have loved to live in the simpler times of the 50s/60s and witness some of the amazing changes that took place. It would have been fun to be a part of the surf culture as it was developing.
If you could have a superhero power what would it be?
I’m not that big into superheroes or comics but I do think that being able to control time would be amazing. Time is the one thing that you can’t get more of so having the ability to stop, pause or rewind time would be amazing.
What is your favorite candy?
This one’s easy, anything with peanut butter. Specifically Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. I also have a small addiction with Tagalong Girl Scout cookies.
