Read Across America
with the SDSU Children’s Center
National Education Association's Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness event that celebrates reading on March 2, the birthday of children's author Dr. Seuss, Theodor Geisel.
Dr. Seuss, is one of the most beloved children’s authors of all time. His perseverance (his first book was rejected by close to 30 publishers before finding a home), the variety and success of his work—writing, illustrating, advertising, fine art, sculpture, cartooning, filmmaking and more; and his brilliant imagination and magical way with words make him one of our most fascinating authors.
In cities and towns across the nation, teachers, teenagers, librarians, politicians, actors, athletes, parents, grandparents and others develop activities to bring reading excitement to children of all ages. Governors, mayors and other elected officials recognize the role reading plays in their communities with proclamations and floor statements. Athletes and actors issue reading challenges to young readers. And teachers and principals seem to be more than happy to dye their hair green or be duct-taped to a wall if it boosts their students’ reading.
Here at SDSU, join the preschoolers from the SDSU Children’s Center and students in the Child and Family Development Department as they listen to their favorite children’s books being read out loud!
Help us bring awareness of the importance of early literacy and celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss, the honorary chair of this national event. Bring your favorite book and a friend to celebrate with us on the Aztec Green, Wednesday, March 2nd, from 11am-12pm.
Oh, the places we can go with books!
Put the Fun in Fundraising!

3. How long have you worked for A.S.?
I have had the opportunity to work at the box office for 2 years — my 3-year anniversary is approaching soon.
4. What was the last movie you saw?
The last movie I watched for the 5th consecutive time is the animated film, “Home.” Watch and you’ll soon find out why.
5. If you won $5 million what would you do with it?
If I won $5 million dollars, I would put a portion towards my school loans, a portion set aside for my family and a good portion towards a non-profit organization focused on delivering health to underserved minorities who don’t have access to proper health education and preventive care.
6. What is your favorite dessert?
Anything with chocolate is automatically my favorite.
7. What city would you most like to visit or visit again?
This summer I will actually have the opportunity to visit London as a part of my study abroad requirements; I'm excited to be able to experience academic life in another country.
8. Which three people (living or dead) you would like to have dinner with?
My granddads! Unfortunately due to the civil war that broke out in Somalia, I lost both my granddads. I never got to meet them but with the stories my parent’s share they are very much alive figuratively. It would be nice to actually hear those stories face to face and have them tell me their experiences.
The third individual would be Beyonce, because why not Beyonce?
9. Who is your favorite singer / musician / musical group?
Beyoncé! In Destiny’s child to her solo transition, I’ve enjoyed the ride! She’s a flawless performer (pun intended) and I can’t wait see her live!
10. If you could go back or forward in time, where would you go?
I would love to go forward in time, more specifically to my Masters in Public Health degree in hand. I want to experience what it’s finally like to be done with school and look at all my accomplishments summed up into one paper!
11. “Most people don’t know that I like to…”
Watch horrible reality TV shows...at one point or another things get so bad that it actually starts to get good, you just can’t look away.
12. Who is your favorite actor or actress?
Viola Davis is hands-down the best actress in my opinion. I’ve seen most of her movies in which she is great in of course, but I’ve recently fallen in love with her while watching “How To Get Away With Murder”! (A must watch!)
13. If you could have a superhero power what would it be?
I would choose the power to teleport! I’m always late in every aspect of my life, I don’t have a sense of time. I could plan my day better with teleportation as my superpower and also save time on the hassle of getting to a place. How about the benefit of not having to pay for air fare?!! If I want to experience the four seasons that half the country gets to, then it’s possible with transportation. I can transport myself in a second somewhere else or when I feel like going zip lining one day, I could easily transport myself to Costa Rica.
14. What is one of your favorite things to do on the SDSU campus?
Getting involved in student organizations! After joining a variety of orgs, I’ve learned that SDSU is not only about academics but that a teaching experience can happen outside the classroom. I’ve learned so much by joining Students 4 Public Health and many more organizations. Most importantly, I have met a myriad of amazing people who I share the same goals and aspirations with.
15. Is your favorite part of working for A.S.?
The people!!! The very best part of working is the fact that I get to work with them. I love my bosses and coworkers! I sometimes forget I’m actually working considering it feels like I’m getting paid to hang out with good friends.
