MBAC to Provide Sail Training
to Future Naval Officers
The Mission Bay Aquatic Center has been awarded a 5-year contract to be the west coast school charged with training the next generation of naval officers in the tradition of sailing. Five-hundred midshipmen trained last month to qualify as United States Navy Sailing Association Skipper 'B' at MBAC. There are just two schools in the nation where midshipmen receive this training; the Big Blue Sailing Academy at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia on the east coast, and now, Mission Bay Aquatic Center on the west coast.
MBAC Assistant Director, Kevin Waldick, shared, "It's great to support the development of future US Navy officers and share in the long-held tradition that naval officers learn to sail." He noted that the involvement in the contract has enabled MBAC to upgrade some of its sailing fleet, including replacing MBAC's fleet of Hobie 16s later this summer.

Making Art is Good for You!
Even though you may not consider yourself an artist, making art is good for you! Any type of art! Because our lives are focused on hectic and sometimes stressful activities — our job, going to school, caring for our children and family — we never really get a chance to just relax.
Making art benefits both your mind and body. Tapping into your creative side can actually reduce stress and anxiety; clearing your mind and making you feel better. Doodling, coloring or painting should become a part of your weekly schedule.
Art helps you slow down
We do plenty of rushing during the week, so drawing, painting, or even snapping a photograph, helps you to physically and mentally slow down. Art equals relaxation.
Get in touch with your creative side
Embracing your creative side is something you probably don't do on a regular basis. You may not have a creative job, so if you stare at spreadsheets all day, take out a pencil or marker and doodle. You will be surprised at the things you create.
Let out your emotions
The act of putting crayon or pencil to paper is an excellent way of expressing your emotions. If you are angry, you will create an "angry" drawing. But that is OK; it is a great way to acknowledge your inner feelings and let out things you might not find the words to say.
So if you always say, "I can't even draw a straight line," or "I'm not artistic," take out some crayons, colored pencils or markers and start doodling. It is good for you!

15 Questions
Joshua Holmes, Public Relations Assistant
1. What is your name and title?
Joshua Holmes, Public Relations Assistant
2. Which A.S. department do you work in?
Marketing for Aztec Recreation. I am responsible for developing, implementing and documenting social media program advertisements and community/member engagement campaigns for Aztec Recreation across its social platforms.
3. How long have you worked for A.S.?
I've worked for A.S. for four years this upcoming September.
4. If you won $5 million, what would you do with it?
I'd pay off any debt my parents have and pay for my sister's graduate school. I'd also pay off my best friend Lee's school loans and my other two friends Matt and Mario. I'd put at least a million in any tech stocks I feel are worthy on the stock market. I'd get another degree(s) from the Art Institute in Graphic & Web Design, Advertising, and Animation. I'd spread $1.5 million across 3 savings accounts (Wells Fargo, USAA, CHASE) for family. Whatever money is left over, I'd put into my main checking account and use it for rent, family trips and probably a spider monkey or a Bengal cat (domestic cat mixed with leopard) or both.
5. Which three people (living or dead) you would like to have dinner with?
Abraham Lincoln, my grandpa and president Obama. It'd be great to see my grandpa again to enjoy his presence as an adult because he passed away when I was real young, but I still very much remember him. They are my two favorite presidents and I would love to see how they'd interact in conversation and the ideas they'd come up with.
6. What is your favorite ride at an amusement park?
My favorite ride is "The Riddler's Revenge" at Six Flags Magic Mountain because I love rollercoasters that have unique designs and move extremely fast, and this ride fits my criteria.
7. Would you rather build a sandcastle or a snowman?
Snowman. Sandcastles can be frustrating because they can be easily destroyed. A snowman, if constructed properly, is harder to destroy and can last longer.
8. What is your favorite book?
Classics of Western Philosophy is my favorite book. It changed my perception on almost everything I thought I knew about philosophy and how I thought about the world.
9. Who is your favorite individual athlete?
My favorite individual athletes are Kevin Durant and J.J. Watt. They are two of the most phenomenal athletes on the planet while simultaneously the most down to earth people you'd ever meet. I don't see how anyone couldn't like them if you were aware of the types of interactions they have with fans.
10. What do you want to be when you grow up?
I would like to be a creative director for Disney and Marvel Studios that works on the marketing and social media campaigns for different movies and events. I love both companies and the creative process behind advertising with a passion and would love a career that I can combine them together.
11. If you could go back or forward in time, where would you go?
I would go forward in time because I want to see the technology of the future.
12. When you visit the Zoo, which animal do you make sure you see?
I make sure to see the giraffes. They're beautiful and awkward looking animals that make me laugh and smile.
13. What was or is your favorite subject in school?
Psychology. There's nothing more fascinating to me than how our brain functions and controls our behavior.
14. Who is your favorite actor or actress?
Will Ferrell. I find his acting style and comedic style hilarious. I will watch any movie, multiple times if it has Will Ferrell in it.
15. What is your favorite part about working for A.S.? And what A.S. staff member has inspired/supported you the most?
My favorite part about working for A.S. is the creative process I have with my team. I enjoy coming up with an idea or goal and then taking the several steps to implement that idea with my marketing team. It's really fun and really satisfying to see it come to life. Nicole Widmer, Aztec Recreation's Associate Director of Member Services & Facilities, has provided me with inspiration and support.

National Lollipop Day
The idea of an edible candy on a stick is very simple, and it is probable that the lollipop has been invented and reinvented numerous times. The first confectioneries that closely resemble what we call lollipops date to the Middle Ages, when the nobility would often eat boiled sugar with the aid of sticks or handles. The invention of the modern lollipop is still something of a mystery but a number of American companies in the early 20th century have laid claim to it. According to the book Food For Thought: Extraordinary Little Chronicles of the World, they were invented by George Smith of New Haven, Connecticut, who started making large boiled sweets mounted on sticks in 1908. He named them after a racehorse of the time, Lolly Pop.
