A is for Art
Sneak Peek: Friday, April 8, 2016 — Exhibition: Saturday, April 16, 2016
A is for Art, a program of the SDSU Children's Center, showcases the amazing potential for creative expression by children between 6 months to 5 years of age. Each spring, special A is for Art events are held for the public to view paintings created by the children in collaboration with local community artists and classroom teachers. Local guest artists visit the classrooms to discuss their own art, demonstrate some artistic techniques and mentor children in creating a painting created by children in each classroom.
This year each classroom selected a well-known artist to study and then used that artist's painting techniques and style to create their own masterpiece. These 10 paintings will be on display at the Sneak Peek and will be available in a live auction at the Exhibition. Also each cottage (two classrooms) worked with a local artist to create an additional 5 paintings, which will be available in a live auction at the Sneak Peek.
Every child at the Center also had the opportunity to participate in the creation of one final painting. This Center-wide masterpiece was created using many techniques from the infants classroom using traditional paint brushes to the preschool classroom dropping paint soaked sensory balls on to the canvas. This painting will be available in a live auction at the Exhibition.

15 Questions
Tim Ripke, Viejas Arena Assistant Director
1. What is your name and title?
Tim Ripke, Assistant Director
2. Which A.S. department do you work in?
Viejas Arena and the Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre. I oversee the Events, Operations and Facility Services Departments and act in the absence of the Director.
3. How long have you worked for A.S.?
I started working for Associated Students in 1987 refereeing basketball games as a student. I became a full-time employee on March 1, 1997.
4. What was the last movie you saw?
Risen — thumbs up. My daughter is 8 so it is the first movie I've seen in a LONG time that wasn't animated!
5. If you won $5 million what would you do with it?
I would give $4.5 million away to various charities. Pay off my house. Then, give the rest to my wife because she would be REALLY mad that I gave $4.5 million dollars away.
6. Which three people (living or dead) you would like to have dinner with?
I’m going to cheat: my four brothers & sisters. It has been over 30 years since all 5 of us have been together. It would be great to all get together!
7. What is your favorite ride at an amusement park?
I like the ride at Knott's Berry Farm that takes you straight up in the air, holds for a minute, and drops you straight down. Scares the bejeebers out of me!
8. Would you rather build a sandcastle or a snowman?
I do not like sand — snow is awesome! Have you ever thrown a sand-ball at someone? Snowballs are much more fun! I leave the sand to the Rea Family.
9. Who is your favorite singer / musician / musical group?
I grew up in Detroit. Anyone who grew up in Detroit knows Bob Seger & Motown. I am a huge fan of both. I know Bob Seger's album "Live Bullet" by heart.
10. What is your favorite book?
One of my favorite movies of all time is To Kill a Mockingbird. So I was excited to read Harper Lee's Go Set a Watchman. Otherwise, I am always reading the Bible.
11. What is your favorite sports team or who is your favorite individual athlete?

12. What do you want to be when you grow up?
I refuse to grow up. It's more fun to be a kid. My 8-year-old daughter wonders when I'm going to grow up. If I had to grow up, I'd be a math teacher — doesn't that sound fun!
13. What type of pets do you have and what are their names?
We adopt rescued German Shepherds. We had Shayla for 15 years. Currently we have Trapper. We just added a Dachshund. Her name is Lilly. They both follow Tamara around the house.
14. Do you like to cook and what is your specialty?
Love to cook... Hot Pockets. Actually, my specialty is Chili-mac. Dennison's chili with Macaroni & Cheese — scrumptious! As you can tell, I pride myself on healthy eating.
15. What do you like most about working for A.S.?
First of all, I work with some great folks at Viejas Arena. Second, I really enjoy working with our student employees. I enjoy encouraging, guiding and coaching them and then getting out of their way and watching them grow!
