A is for Art

SDSU Children’s Center

A is for Art

Art is a very important component of the curriculum at the SDSU Children’s Center. The children are taught elementary concepts of art such as line, shape, form, texture and color as they create their own masterpieces. As with all the other subjects covered at the Center, art is “participatory learning,” learning while doing.

A is for Art is a program of the Center that showcases the amazing potential for creative expression by children between 7 months to 5 years of age. Special “A is for Art” events are held for the public to view paintings created by the children in collaboration with local community artists and classroom teachers. Local guest artists visit the classrooms to discuss their own art, demonstrate some artistic techniques and mentor children in creating a painting in each classroom.

This year marks the 11th anniversary of “A is for Art.” The children and staff would like to invite you to join them for this year’s events.

15 Questions

Kathryn Zambon, Union Programs & Services

Kathryn Zambon
Kathryn Zambon

What is your name and title?
Kathryn Zambon, Events Planner

Which A.S. department do you work in?
Union Programs & Services. As the Events Planner, I work mostly with student organizations, advising them on the event planning process in order to host events in the Union.

How many years have you worked for A.S.?
1.5 years

What is your favorite dessert?
I love tiramisu cheesecake. It’s a combination of three of my favorite things: coffee, cheese, and cake.

What city would you most like to visit or visit again?
I have always wanted to visit Paris and get back in the swing of speaking French. I would love to explore the fashion, the food, the arts, and the history that is part of the everyday culture in Paris.

What is your favorite ride at an amusement park?
I cannot leave an amusement park until I have ridden the Tilt-A-Whirl. It was my favorite ride at the county fair as a kid and it is still my favorite traditional amusement park ride.

Would you rather build a sandcastle or a snowman?
Ideally, I would be building a snowman at the beach. I am originally from Vermont, therefore I have a lot of experience in building snowmen, and I am still getting used to how sand is inescapable once you have encountered it.

What is your favorite sports team or who is your favorite individual athlete?
My favorite sports team is the Cleveland Browns. I have no connection to Cleveland other than my grandfather’s childhood decision to cheer for the Browns and now our family is obligated to root for the underdog - Chomps.

What do you want to be when you grow up?
When I grow up I want to be a manager of a band or work at a record label that produces live musical events. As an undergrad, I was the Concerts Coordinator for the university and that position solidified my passion for the industry.

What type of pets do you have and what are their names?
I am the proud “ownee” of two rescue cats. A 1-year old brown tabby named Optimus and a 5-year old black cat named Gingerbread (only a real male cat can pull that name off).

Do you like to cook and what is your specialty?
I love to bake. My specialty dessert is a Harvey Wallbanger cake that my grandmother makes. I have recently mastered the Harvey cupcake with cream cheese frosting. Feel free to contact me for the recipe stuff this good shouldn’t be kept a secret!

If you could go back or forward in time, where would you go?
I would go forward in time just to witness all of the science fiction inventions our generations have dreamed up become a reality.

“Most people don’t know that I like to…”
… practice Martial Arts. I previously was a karate instructor for 4 years in back in Vermont. A new goal of mine is to start studying Krav Maga.

If you could have a superhero power what would it be?
I would want the power to teleport so that I would be able to travel the world, visit my family more often, never wait in traffic, and lessen my footprint on the environment.

If you could be any color in a box of Crayola Crayons, what color would you be and why?
I think I would be most likely be the color Periwinkle. A cool, bright color that is calming but spritely.

What is your favorite candy?
My favorite candy is those sour patch watermelons. Not too sweet, not too sour.
