Do you remember the Aztec Center?
In 1963, the SDSU student body approved a mandatory fee to build a student union facility. A few years later, in 1968, the Aztec Center opened as the first permanent student union on any CSU campus. Aztec Center was the original home of Montezuma Hall, Montezuma Lounge, Bowling & Games, A.S. Government Affairs, meetings rooms and student organizations office space.
Now, thanks to SDSU Library & Information Access there is a visual record of the construction the Aztec Center. A collection of over 400 historic photographs of the Center have been digitized and are now available online. The collection includes photos of all stages of the building's construction, as well as beautiful images of the completed mid-century modern project. For over 40 years, the Aztec Center served as a campus hub, providing SDSU students a place to study, relax, make friends, get involved, take in a concert or attend a major event.
In 2014, the new Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union, also built with student fees, was completed to replace the Aztec Center.
The Children's Center and the Olympics
What do the SDSU Children's Center and the Summer Olympics have in common? It's Barb Bowen. Barb is the Center's Office Supervisor and the mother of Alex Bowen who is a member the US Men's Olympic Water Polo Team. Alex is a graduate of Stanford University with a degree in Product Design/Mechanical Engineering, where he was also a member of the water polo team.
Barb and Alex have generously agreed to share their thoughts about being part of the 2016 Olympic Games.
A.S.: Alex, congratulations on being selected for the US Olympic Men's Water Polo Team. How does it feel to be part of the team?
Alex: It feels fantastic. Making the team is a dream come true that I have worked almost my entire life to make it to this point.
A.S.: When did you first start playing water polo? And what got you interested?
Alex: I started playing when I was seven years old and I became interested while splashing around in the shallow end and watching my Dad coach his high school team.
A.S.: Is your mother more of cheerleader or a coach?
Alex: My Mom is more the cheerleader and my Dad, a coach. I have to thank them both for always being there for me.
A.S.: What lessons have you learned on your path to being selected for the Olympic team?
Alex: The biggest lesson I have learned is to work through your mistakes and keep playing.
A.S.: What advice do you have for any one who dreams of being in the Olympics?
Alex: The best advice I can give is to work hard and focus on the fundamentals for whatever sport that you play.
A.S.: Barb, congratulations on Alex being selected for the US Olympics Men's Water Polo Team. How does it feel to have a son in the Olympics?
Barb: It is a strange experience to have my son selected as part of the Olympic team. We've always been very proud of him and had faith in him but it still seems like a dream.
A.S.: Growing up was Alex always interested in swimming?
Barb: He has always been very interested in water polo, since his Dad coaches and swimming was always a part of it.
A.S.: Are you more of cheerleader or a coach?
Barb: I am definitely more of a cheerleader – I leave the coaching for the coaches.
A.S.: What sacrifices have you and your family had to make so that Alex could peruse his dream?
Barb: Our family has been very lucky to be part of the water polo community, so it hasn't been much of a sacrifice. Our vacations do revolve around water polo tournaments but it has made it a family activity since Rod coaches and both of my boys play.
A.S.: What advice do you have for a parent who has a child who dreams of being in the Olympics?
Barb: I would just tell parents to encourage their child's dreams and the steps that it takes along the way.
Also supporting Alex in his quest for gold, are his younger brother, Eric, who is majoring in Psychology with a minor in Computer Science at Princeton University and his father Rod, who runs the family's printing business. Rod coaches water polo at Santana High School and has for 22 years, he also coaches at San Diego Shores Water Polo Club.
Rod was Alex's first coach and it was because of Alex's desire to participate at a young age, that Rod started coaching young athletes.
Congratulations to the entire Bowen family, and Alex, best of luck in Rio!

First Day of Classes
National Marshmallow Toasting Day
During eleven out of the twelve months of the year, we enjoy a wide range of holidays. When we get to August, there is a major shortage of big holidays to celebrate. Thankfully, there is National Marshmallow Toasting Day! Tonight by a bonfire, toast a big, soft, sticky and sweet marshmallow... or two... or three. Summer would not be the same without this great bonfire treat.
