SDSU Children’s Center - A is for Art
This year’s 15th Anniversary “A is for Art” Exhibition, which was held March 2 at the Southwestern Yacht Club in Point Loma, showcased the creative talents of the children who attend the SDSU Children’s Center. Each classroom, Infants to Pre-K, created a collaborative painting that was on display at the event. Over 200 Children’s Center art-loving supporters crowded the club to get a peek at the 11 paintings.
Rain did not dampen the evening that was filled with children’s artwork, opportunity drawings, dinner, beer and wine. One of the favorite opportunity drawing baskets was “Southwest Airlines.” The lucky ticket holder took home two round-trip tickets, good for flights anywhere in the continental United States.
The highlight of the evening was the live auction of the paintings created by the children. Lead by the auctioneer, Johnny Dutra, a Center parent, the bidding was very lively with attendees vying to outbid each other for their favorite painting. One painting entitled “The Seeds We Sow,” created by the Giraffes classroom, started a bidding war that finally ended with one art-lover taking home the painting for $2,100. Not far behind was the painting created in the Memory Park classroom, “Amor,” which went to the lucky bidder for $1,500. That evening, over $10,000 was raised for the Center.
All monies raised went towards purchasing more technological support and resources for teachers to use for professional documentation in the classrooms. Documentation is used to perform child assessments, goal setting, daily curriculum and to share information with parents.
Many thanks to the event donors, volunteers, the Center’s teachers and staff and to the “A is for Art” committee, who all helped to made this event a huge success!
If you missed the Exhibition, you can still see all the amazing paintings on the Center’s website.
