Milestones, Fresh Starts & a Side of Tacos

Director's Message: Tim Ripke

WARNING: Ripke humor ahead

Happy New Year, A.S. family!

It’s that time of year when we endure the struggle of another harsh San Diego winter. I even found myself reaching for a hoodie and a pair of socks to ward off the chill. It’s tough going and yet somehow, we endure.

As we embrace the new year, I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season relaxing with family and friends, traveling or getting outdoors. A new calendar year also brings the start of the Spring semester, as we welcome back students from winter break. For those beginning their last semester, CONGRATULATIONS! Enjoy, finish strong and we will see you in Viejas Arena for Commencement in May!

On January 16, Viejas Arena will host the first San Diego MOJO Volleyball game of the season. This marks the second year Viejas Arena has been home court of the San Diego MOJO, and staff are looking forward to hosting 14 home contests throughout the first week of May.

At Viejas Arena, we are also midway through the basketball season. The San Diego State University Men’s and Women’s basketball teams are performing well and carrying on victories. Over the next two months, both teams will compete in conference play. As we cheer them on, I am hopeful we’ll hear the teams called on Selection Sunday and see them seeded for success in the NCAA Tournament.

Although the Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre will be closed during winter break, our staff is thrilled to host the GreenFest concert on March 7. Stay tuned for the artist announcement in February!

Here’s to an incredible year ahead!

Aztecs Rock Hunger Celebrates Its Million-Dollar Year

by Kripa Mayureshwar, Aztecs Rock Hunger Public Relations Officer

Since 2010, the annual Aztecs Rock Hunger campaign has raised $1,019,978 in lifetime donations to benefit the SDSU Economic Crisis Response Team, A.S. Food Pantry and The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank.

This article previously appeared in the SDSU NewsCenter.

San Diego State University’s 2024 Aztecs Rock Hunger campaign achieved its goal of attaining $1 million in lifetime donations, announcing a grand total of $1,019,978 since 2010 during the Aztecs Rock Hunger Reveal event on Dec. 4 at the Lee & Frank Goldberg Courtyard of Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union.

“A million is a massive number if you really think about it,” said Aztecs Rock Hunger Chair Vincent Lin. “I could not have accomplished this important milestone without my predecessors who have put in years of incredible effort toward fighting food insecurity. It is crucial that students have the means to succeed before even walking into the classroom, and that starts with basic needs.”

Between Oct. 4 and Oct. 27, the university-wide campaign, organized by Associated Students, collected donations to address food and nutrition insecurity within the SDSU and greater San Diego community. All proceeds support the SDSU Economic Crisis Response Team, A.S. Food Pantry and the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank where a $1 donation to ARH provided two meals to those in need.

As the cost of living continues to rise, addressing food and nutrition insecurity is more critical than ever, emphasized with 1 in 4 adults in San Diego County being nutrition insecure. Over the past year, the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank served an average of 400,000 San Diegans per month and distributed 50 million pounds of food and supplies last year.

“We created this partnership in 2010 [between The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank and SDSU] to address student hunger,” said Casey Castillo, CEO of the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank. “I love that we're able to involve the whole campus. This campaign not only supports those on campus but also educates the public about hunger-related issues. So we just want to see it keep growing.”

The funds raised during the campaign will also benefit the A.S. Food Pantry, which offers free, fresh, and nutritious food to SDSU students three times a week. During the 2023-24 academic year, the pantry distributed over 130,000 pounds of food to students in need. In addition to supporting the A.S. Food Pantry, 20% of donations raised from the Aztecs Rock Hunger campaign will go to the SDSU Economic Crisis Response Team (ECRT), which assists students facing food, housing or financial emergencies that affect their well-being and academic success. During the 2023-24 academic year, ECRT provided $55,000 in emergency food assistance to students and provided support to over 1,700 individual students.

“Beyond our campus, the overall nutrition insecurity rate in San Diego County has risen to 25%,” said SDSU President Adela de la Torre. “As you look around this beautiful city, it’s shocking to think that one out of every four people struggles to provide three nutritious meals a day for themselves or their families. That’s why I am so proud to see Associated Students and our SDSU community step up and face this challenge head-on.”

“I really commend everyone who has participated or donated in Aztecs Rock Hunger,” Lin said. “Everyone deserves access to basic needs, and no one should wonder where their next meal will come from. I am proud that we continue to unite as a university and San Diego community to help fight against food and nutrition insecurity.”

National Fish Taco Day

San Diego is home to some of the best fish tacos in the world, and what better way to celebrate National Fish Taco Day on Jan. 25 than by sharing our favorite places and recipes? Whether you’re craving a local classic or inspired to make some tacos yourself, check out our A.S. staff recommendations!

Cole Davis

Fitness and Wellness Coordinator

“Pacific Beach Fish Shop has the best fish tacos I've had in San Diego (the Spicy Dorado and Pineapple Express tacos are a must!). In addition to the delicious corn tortillas and incredibly fresh fish, Pacific Beach Fish Shop gives you the ability to build your own meal by selecting the fish, marinade and style you want your food prepared. A great choice for indecisive diners that like to have options!”

Kevin Waldick

MBAC Director

“My family loves this Seared Ahi Tacos with Lime Zest Crema recipe I came across many years ago. You'll notice that I left wasabi out of the title, as I typically omit the wasabi, radish and horseradish from the recipe because our 10 year old does not agree with those ingredients. We also substitute greek yogurt for heavy cream, and pre packaged slaw for shredded cabbage and it turns out magnifique!

This is an outstanding recipe because it is healthy, easy and we typically have the ingredients at-hand to put it together quickly. If you decide to try it, be sure to take the extra optional step of quick pickling the cabbage. Buen provecho!”

Maya Massamiri

SDSU Children’s Center Master Teacher

“My favorite place to get a fish taco is El Pueblo in Carmel Valley! They are absolutely scrumptious and customizable with your choice of flour or corn tortilla, red or green sauce, and best of all only $1.59!”

Rodrigo Mercado

Human Resources Associate Director

“I really enjoy going to El Pescador Fish Market in La Jolla for fish tacos or for any seafood options. Everything is fresh there. Only grilled fish options, no deep fried fish, with some raw fish (sashimi and poke) available. Also, you can enjoy some home cooked meals by purchasing seasonal and local fish from the market. This is a gem in La Jolla!”

Eryn Juns

SDSU Children’s Center Supervising Teacher

“I am far from a fish taco aficionado, but, if I am going to eat them, they WILL be from South Beach Bar & Grill. They are located right at the end of Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to some yummy fish tacos that come with a great view of the ocean. Happy National Fish Taco Day!”

New A.S. Employees

Antonio Rivera

IT Systems Analyst

Hey everyone! My name is Antonio Rivera and I have joined the A.S. team as the IT Systems Analyst. I was born here in San Diego and grew up in Santee. I graduated with honors from SDSU in May of 2024 with a double bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and History. It is a goal of mine to further my education and eventually earn a master’s degree in Computer Science.

Before becoming full time, I worked part time for A.S. as an IT Student Technician for two years. It was in this role where I learned about working with electronics on a professional level. I have always been captivated by technology, so having the opportunity to be surrounded by it in my work feels both exciting and fulfilling. While I was a student, I also had the opportunity to work with the SDSU Mechatronics Club to help build their fully autonomous submarine, Scion.

Outside of work, I enjoy a wide variety of hobbies including: golf, surfing, playing softball, mountain biking, hiking, playing video games, programming and watching sports. I also enjoy playing guitar and bass and I occasionally play with my friends.

I am super excited for the opportunity to continue my professional growth with A.S. and continue building rapport with the entire A.S. family!

15 Questions

Sam Ramtin

Government Affairs Coordinator

  1. What is your name and title?

    Sam Ramtin, Government Affairs Coordinator

  2. Which A.S. department do you work in?

Government Affairs. I have the opportunity to work with amazing student leaders, plan civic engagement initiatives, support study abroad scholarships and promote student advocacy.

  3. How long have you worked for A.S.?

This December marks two years! Time flies.

  4. What do you like most about working for A.S.?

The Government Affairs team I work with is what makes me look forward to each day. The rapport and camaraderie between the GAO staff is something I value immensely. Everyone is a pleasure to work with and it helps when working on the many projects and initiatives that Associated Students organizes!

  5. What was the last movie you saw?

Thumbs up or thumbs down? Caddo Lake on HBO — I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was! I went in totally blind and really enjoyed the original story. I’m also going to see Gladiator II in theaters very soon, and I’m sure I’ll enjoy it; Ridley Scott rarely misses.

  6. What is your favorite dessert? And why?

    I’ve never encountered a Cannoli I didn’t like.

  7. Which three people (living or dead) would you like to have dinner with?

    There’s so many, but here’s a few:

    • Arnold Schwarzenegger — I’d discuss fitness, his journey as a movie star, entering politics and more. There’s enough to chat about for several dinners.
    • Cyrus Habib — He’s the first Iranian-American to hold statewide office in the U.S. as Lt. Governor of Washington from 2017-2021. Despite his political stardom rising, Cyrus decided not to pursue the governorship, retired from politics, and entered the Jesuit order to serve as a priest. I’d love to hear more about how he overcame challenges, like losing his eyesight to cancer as a child, and why he made the decision to step away from political fame.
    • Theodore Roosevelt — I would love to talk about his life, building resilience in the face of adversity and hear stories from his Presidency. His life is pretty incredible and I think it’d be a fun rumpus.
  8. Do you prefer pens or pencils? Why?

Pens — sometimes you need to make a decision and commit.

  9. What is your favorite book?

Growing up, I often reread “My Side of the Mountain” by Jean Craighead George. It definitely had a formative influence on me. The book is about a boy, Sam Gribley, who runs away to live alone in the Catskill Mountains, where he learns courage, independence and survival during a transformative year in the wilderness.

  10. Would you rather be a superhero or the world’s best chef?

Who says I’m not already the world’s best chef? Just kidding. I’d be a superhero.

  11. There is a free, round-trip shuttle to Mars. The catch: it will take one year of your life to go, visit, and come back. Are you in?

Absolutely — what an epic adventure. How could you not? Makes me think of the Herman Melville quote from Moby Dick: “As for me, I am tormented with an everlasting itch for things remote. I love to sail forbidden seas…”

  12. What is your favorite breakfast food?

Chilaquiles, with the eggs scrambled, topped with green salsa. And a decaf coffee — I already have enough energy.

  13. When you visit the Zoo, which animal do you make sure you see, and why?

I really like walking through the multi-level aviaries. Very immersive.

  14. What does your perfect burger have on it?

Brioche bun, spicy mayo, melted goat cheese, double patty cooked medium, arugula, thin slice of tomato, pickles, Island Red’s thin fried onions. Side of curly fries with mustard and ketchup.

  15. Would you rather speak all languages or be able to talk with animals?

Speak all languages. I love travelling and knowing the language adds a depth to those experiences that can’t be matched.
