Gratitude, Growth and Goodbyes

Director's Message: Carlos Careaga

Hello A.S. Friends,

As the end of the semester approaches, I find myself reminiscing about the graduation ceremonies of friends I attended back when I was still a sophomore or junior. It was inspiring to hear stories shared by graduating students and commencement speakers. These tales of achievement, personal growth, overcoming the odds and supportive mentorship are themes that will likely echo at SDSU’s upcoming commencement ceremonies.

Recently, I caught up with a former A.S. VP of Finance, who reminded me that one of my most important duties is telling stories. People assume that a budget is a bunch of numbers, but it's much more than that. A.S. recently completed its annual budget cycle, which culminated in a presentation to the A.S. Board of Directors and a memo to SDSU President de la Torre. After department directors had done the heavy lifting on their individual budgets, I listened to them tell me about their goals and challenges for the coming year. Christina Brown, Lauren Hooley and I then spent time consolidating and crafting a story about the upcoming year. Our goal is to ensure we effectively tell the story of A.S. to the campus audience, so we dedicated many hours to refining communication.

Storytelling is one of the best ways to convey a message, and I often forget that our role as “budget people” isn't just to report numbers. If you won’t be able to attend a graduation ceremony this year, I encourage you to watch a few commencement speeches. I have always found listening to stories has been encouraging and time well spent. And remember, whether you are crafting your own personal or professional messages, your story can make a meaningful impact.

Be well,

Carlos Careaga
Finance Director

APIDA Heritage Month

In May, SDSU recognizes Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) Heritage Month highlighting the experiences, achievements and the history of the APIDA community. This year’s theme is “Unity in Community.”

The nation-wide celebration, observed since the 1970s, commemorates the arrival of the first Japanese immigrant to the U.S. on May 7, 1843, and the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad on May 10, 1869, which was made possible by the critical contributions of Chinese laborers.

Read below as Janice Dils, A.S. Associate Director of Government Affairs, shares her reflection on APIDA Heritage Month:

“APIDA Heritage Month is a chance for me to reflect on my Filipino roots and celebrate the richness and diversity of our community. It is a time to recognize where we come from, honor the personal experiences that shaped me as a person I am today, and share space with others who are also proud of their heritage. I feel grounded when I think about how our cultures continue to grow and show up in meaningful ways. This month reminds me to celebrate, connect, and keep learning from others who continue to inspire me to cherish the richness of my culture.”

In celebration of APIDA Heritage Month, SDSU’s APIDA Resource Center and campus partners plan educational and celebratory activities. All students, regardless of race, sex, color, ethnicity or national origin, who are interested in celebrating and participating are welcome.

A.S. Executive Officer Reflections

From registering almost 1,800 students to vote to reaching $1 million in lifetime donations for Aztecs Rock Hunger, our 2025-26 A.S. Executive Officers have had a busy year representing almost 40,000 SDSU students! As their term comes to an end, read below as they reflect on the past year:

Katarina “Kat” Hernandez, A.S. President

What was your favorite memory in the past year?

My favorite memory this past year was the Executive Officer Bonding Retreat.

I am most proud of myself for accomplishing _____ during my term.

Versatility. I challenged myself to prioritize different organizations along with my role, and truly grew as a person. Growing as a person has also allowed my organizations to grow and learn.

If I had to describe my term in 3 words it would be…

Gracious, significant and colorful.

What is one thing you learned in A.S. that you will take into your future endeavors?

The most important thing I learned in A.S. was how to be intentional about decisions, how to approach team dynamics, and how to delegate tasks to be valuable for others.

What are your future plans?

I am pursuing a career in politics, so I will be working as a Field Representative in the California State Assembly, representing my district in San Diego, which is approximately 505,208 people. I will be working on a Master’s in Public Administration - Criminal Justice Administration.

Tajuddin Henry, A.S. Executive Vice President

What was your favorite memory in the past year?

My favorite memory from the past year was growing closer to my fellow A.S. leaders. Whether through long planning sessions, shared challenges or simply celebrating our wins together, those relationships became one of the most meaningful parts of my experience. The camaraderie, support and laughter we shared reminded me that leadership is just as much about the people you serve with as it is about the work you do.

I am most proud of myself for accomplishing _____ during my term.

I am most proud of myself for standardizing transition documents across our various boards, committees and commissions. No matter the goal set, I was determined to leave A.S. in a better place than when I joined it. I'm excited about the future A.S. leaders will now have access to clearer, more consistent resources that will help them understand their roles, avoid common pitfalls and build upon the work of those who came before them. This initiative supports sustainability and continuity within our organization and empowers new leaders to start strong and lead confidently from day one. It’s a legacy of structure, clarity and intentionality that I’m proud to leave behind.

If I had to describe my term in 3 words it would be…

Impactful. Challenging. Transformative.

What is one thing you learned in A.S. that you will take into your future endeavors?

One thing I learned in A.S. is the importance of strategic and collaborative leadership. Actual progress happens when you listen intentionally, empower others, plan and create space for diverse voices to lead. I’ll carry that with me in every professional and personal setting.

What are your future plans?

After completing my undergraduate degrees, I plan to pursue a Doctorate in Public Policy. In the long term, I hope to serve in roles that allow me to shape inclusive and holistic environments and advocate for underrepresented communities across the U.S.

Derrick Herrera, A.S. Vice President of External Relations

What was your favorite memory in the past year?

My favorite memory was seeing all of the council members grow every week throughout the year.

I am most proud of myself for accomplishing _____ during my term.

I am most proud of myself for having a robust Rock the Vote campaign during my term.

If I had to describe my term in 3 words it would be…

Fast-paced, impactful and heartwarming.

What is one thing you learned in A.S. that you will take into your future endeavors?

I learned how important it is to delegate responsibility, recognizing that you do not have to do everything alone. This, in turn, empowers the future generation of learners and leaders to take on a role like this.

What are your future plans?

I plan to continue pursuing my Master's in Public Administration at SDSU and serve as the Cal State Student Association (CSSA) Vice President of Legislative Affairs, advocating for nearly 500,000 students.

Vincent Lin, A.S. Vice President of Financial Affairs

What was your favorite memory in the past year?

My favorite memory was the A.S. Retreat and meeting all the A.S. leaders for the first time.

I am most proud of myself for accomplishing _____ during my term.

I am most proud of myself for reaching that one million dollar mark for Aztecs Rock Hunger.

If I had to describe my term in 3 words it would be…

Intriguing, turbulent and rewarding.

What is one thing you learned in A.S. that you will take into your future endeavors?

How to be a better leader — having the chance to learn from the GAO staff and my fellow students was something I really cherished and I want to take what I learned from them and bring it into my future endeavors.

What are your future plans?

I plan on finishing my degree and start looking to take my Chartered Financial Analyst Exam.

Trinity Dang, A.S. Vice President of University Affairs

What was your favorite memory in the past year?

My favorite A.S. memory is Fall Retreat!

I am most proud of myself for accomplishing _____ during my term.

I am most proud of myself for accomplishing a passed resolution to adopt the Academic Partnership Agreement during my term.

If I had to describe my term in 3 words it would be…

Successful, worthwhile and revolutionary.

What is one thing you learned in A.S. that you will take into your future endeavors?

I have learned how to see the larger impacts of decisions made and thinking about others' perspectives when making those decisions.

What are your future plans?

My future plans include attending law school at Suffolk Law in Boston, this August!

Teacher Appreciation Week

During Teacher Appreciation Week, from May 5-9, 2025, A.S. honors and celebrates the dedicated teachers from SDSU Children’s Centers who work with children from six months to Pre-K. These educators provide quality care and create meaningful opportunities for lifelong learning.

Their commitment and passion inspire a love of learning that lasts a lifetime. We are grateful for each one of them and recognize the valuable contributions of our teaching staff.

Each teacher plays a unique role in creating a nurturing and stimulating environment, ensuring every young child feels valued and encouraged to explore their potential. Through their dedicated efforts, children gain confidence and develop essential skills that will help them throughout their lives.

Thank you for making a difference every day! Your positive influence extends far beyond the classroom, impacting families and the community. Let us continue to support and uplift one another in our shared mission of early childhood education.

Correct Your Posture Month

May kicks off National Posture Month, making it the perfect time to focus on the importance of good posture and its impact on overall health. Many of us spend our days sitting at desks, commuting or looking at screens, which can lead to poor posture and a host of related issues. Check out the below stretches and poses, some of which can even be done at your desk, to help you stay mindful and improve your posture!

Child's Pose

Steps:

  1. Start on your hands and knees.
  2. Bring your knees together or hip-width apart and sit back on your heels.
  3. Extend your torso forward between your thighs and rest your forehead on the floor.
  4. Extend your arms overhead.

I moved to San Diego only around July of last year and am originally from San Francisco. I went to Marquette University in Wisconsin to study accounting. My extended family is mostly based there, so I am a midwest man at heart. My wife also works here at the Children’s Center, which is how I heard about this amazing program.

At home, I love to cook, play games, surf and play music. I play the bass, drums, guitar and a little piano. My favorite song is “Sultans of Swing.” As for cooking, I love experimenting with different ways to cook the best steak and finding different sauces to pair with it. Someday, I hope to combine all of these random skills I have picked up from school and various jobs and open my own restaurant.

Sean Stouffer

Aztec Student Union Operations Supervisor

My name is Sean Stouffer, I was born and raised in San Diego, and am a San Diego State Aztec through and through. For the past three years, I have been working in events for the San Diego Padres, and before/during that time, I was an SDSU student and participated in A.S. student government.

I am an avid history buff who enjoys everything from studying it to collecting things like records in my spare time. Also, because I grew up in San Diego and I worked for the team, I am a pretty big Padres fan, as well as a San Diego sports fan in general.

Lastly, I look forward to making a long-term positive impact on the Student Union by making sure the organization and I personally contribute to the professional development of our student workers. There was a lot to learn working in professional sports, and I look forward to sharing with this great team!
