Sara Rosenblatt working with STEM students

MBAC Instructor Nationally Recognized by U.S. Sailing

Sara Rosenblatt

Recently, MBAC (Mission Bay Aquatic Center) resident Marine Science Program Assistant, Sara Rosenblatt, was recognized by U.S. Sailing for her achievements in developing STEM programs for kids as part of International Women and Girls in Science Day. Sara, an SDSU Marine Ecology Masters candidate and U.S. Sailing Reach educator, has worked diligently to develop a marine science program at MBAC that inspires interest in ocean conservation, and develops lifelong connections to the ocean through real world experiences.

Sara, who originally became interested in science as a young camper herself, feels it is her role to inspire both girls and boys alike to be interested in STEM and STEM careers at an early age.

“I have always been interested in the ocean and attending marine science camp as a kid is what inspired me to pursue science as a career,” Sara shared one sunny afternoon at MBAC as she prepared seine netting equipment for next week’s Marine Science Afterschool Enrichment program.

“As a young girl I had multiple teachers and counselors that served as mentors along the way and seeing women that I looked up to involved in STEM helped give me the confidence to become a scientist.”

Sara believes that loving what you teach, and being passionate about your knowledge that you share with others greatly aids in an educator’s ability to excite their students about the sciences.

We are so proud of the work that Sara continues to do in developing opportunities for young girls to be exposed to science and the ocean environment and look forward to seeing her bright future unfold.

Marine Science is now available as an Afterschool Enrichment activity, starting with a special 4-day Marine Science camp next week, and as a weekly camp this summer. Other Afterschool Enrichment activities include, wakeboarding, basic sailing, introduction to watersports, and more.

Learn about all of the afterschool enrichment activities available this spring at watersportscamp.com/enrichment!

A.S. Book Club

Update & March Book Selection

The March Book Club selection is: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, by Mark Haddon, which was submitted by Quentin Skaggs, Graphics Manager.

Book cover of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

Discover this bestselling modern classic — both poignant and funny — about a boy with autism who sets out to solve the murder of a neighbor's dog and discovers unexpected truths about himself and the world. Christopher John Francis Boone knows all the countries of the world and their capitals and every prime number up to 7,057. He relates well to animals but has no understanding of human emotions. He cannot stand to be touched. And he detests the color yellow. This improbable story of Christopher's quest to investigate the suspicious death of a neighborhood dog makes for one of the most captivating, unusual, and widely heralded novels in recent years.

Join us to discuss this book.

If you would like to purchase the April book early, we will be reading Where the Crawdads Sing, by Delia Owens.

15 Questions

Maddie Simmons

  1. What is your name, job title and major?
Hi! My name is Maddie Simmons, I am a second year Communication major, and I am a Member Services Lead.
  2. Which A.S. department do you work in?
I work at the Aztec Recreation Center (ARC) and I am responsible for signing up members, helping where needed around the facility and providing the best ARC experience.
  3. How long have you worked for A.S.?
I have worked at the ARC for a little over a year and a half. Fun fact, I began working here a few days after I graduated from high school.
  4. What is your favorite part of working for A.S.?
Hands down my favorite part is my amazing coworkers! I have met my best friends through A.S.
  5. What was the last movie you saw? Thumbs up or thumbs down?
The last movie I saw was “Rush Hour.” Not only was it the last movie I saw but it was my first time seeing it. Definitely a thumbs up.
  6. If you won $5 million what would you do with it?
I would open a dog rescue along with a veterinary office specifically for rescue groups. Most vets don't have the space, time or money to take in a lot of rescue animals.
  7. What is your favorite dessert?
Chocolate covered strawberries! It has always been a fan favorite since I was a kid. You've got the perfect balance of sweetness all around.
  8. Which three people (living or dead) you would like to have dinner with?
Justin Timberlake, Tom Hanks, and Derek Jeter. I would love to have dinner with JT because he is my favorite artist (another fun fact about me, I’ve seen him four times in concert). Tom Hanks because he is such an amazing actor and there has not been a movie I have not liked him in. As an athlete I think we all have that one professional player we look up to the most, and for me that was Derek Jeter so I would love to sit down and get to know him.
  9. What type of pets do you have and what are their names?
I have 3 dogs. Blu, Brody, and Pi. The best furry friends a girl could ask for.
  10. “Most people don’t know that I like to…
    ...do sports photography.”
  11. When you visit the Zoo, which animal do you make sure you see?
The rhinos! I am in love with baby rhinos. Hands down the cutest animals.
  12. What does your perfect burger have on it?
Bacon, cheddar cheese, onions, ketchup and mustard. Keeping it simple.
  13. What’s the best concert you’ve been to and why was it so good?
I am a total concert junkie and have been to more concerts than I can count. Honestly, there is no way I can pick just one so I’d have to say it is a tie between Justin Timberlake, Beyonce and Billie Eilish. They are all true performers.
  14. Which A.S. staff member has inspired/supported you the most?
Marisa Snyder (Member Services Representative at the ARC) has become my best friend thanks to A.S. She is truly there through thick and thin and would drop anything to be there for me.
  15. What is your favorite new stay-at-home activity?
Baking!! I learned to bake homemade sourdough and cinnamon rolls from scratch.
