Celebrations, Summer Safety and Smiles

Pride Month

Pride Month is a joyful time filled with festivals, parades and community celebrations honoring the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. While many cities and organizations acknowledge Pride month in June, San Diego’s celebrations extend to July. At SDSU, Pride is proudly celebrated in June and July as an opportunity to reflect on the progress that has been made for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and recommit to creating more equitable spaces for all.

In celebration of Pride, A.S. staff are encouraged to participate in the following activities and events:

Rainbow Picnic and Crafts

Create pride-themed crafts centered around exploring self-expression and community reflection with provided supplies and light refreshments (participants are welcome to bring their own materials).

SDSU’s 18th Annual Pride Flag Raising Ceremony

Celebrate Pride Month with light refreshments, speeches by students and campus leaders and a performance from the SDSU Color Guard at the Pride Flag raising.

Pride Clothing Swap

Get ready for the pride parade and find an outfit in the free Gender Affirming Closet at The Pride Center! The Pride Center will also be accepting donations of new or gently worn clothing to continue providing the Gender Affirming Closet as a no-cost resource for community members.

San Diego Pride Parade

Each year, San Diego Pride organizes the Pride Parade in San Diego, which brings together over 250,000 people over a 1.5 mile parade route. The first permitted Pride Parade in San Diego took place in 1975, with the first contingent sponsored by SDSU participating in 2006. This year’s Pride parade will feature the SDSU Color Guard.

Summer Safety Tips and A.S. Safety Day

Now that summer is in full swing, it’s important to know how to protect yourself and others from heat-related illness. These conditions can occur when the body’s temperature rises to dangerously high levels, often due to prolonged exposure to heat or strenuous activity in warm environments.

Know the warning signs

Early symptoms of heat illness may include:

  • Heavy sweating
  • Muscle cramps
  • Headache or dizziness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Elevated body temperature

More Serious Symptoms (Heatstroke):

  • No sweating: In severe cases, the skin may become hot and dry.
  • Mental confusion: Disorientation, agitation or changes in mental state can be signs of heatstroke.
  • Seizures: Convulsions or fits can occur in severe heat stroke.
  • Loss of consciousness: Fainting or unconsciousness is a serious symptom that requires immediate medical attention.

How to Respond and First Aid

If you spot someone experiencing the signs above, take action:

  • Give them water to drink.
  • Move them to a cooler area (shade or air conditioning) and use fans to circulate air.
  • Cool them with water, ice or a fan. Place ice or cold wet towels on the head, neck and armpits.
  • Remove outer layers of clothing, especially heavy protective clothing.
  • Do not leave them alone. The illness can rapidly become worse.
  • If in doubt, call 9-1-1 or seek medical care.

How Can Heat-Related Illnesses Be Prevented?

  • Hydrate before, during and after physical activity. For increased activity, drinks with electrolytes are best. Avoid energy drinks.
  • Find shade or a cool area for rest breaks that allow your body to recover.
  • Dress for the heat. A hat and light-colored, loose-fitting (where allowed), breathable clothing are ideal.

A.S. Safety Day - Wednesday, July 9, 2025

Two Truths and a Lie

July 7 is Tell the Truth Day — a lighthearted reminder to celebrate honesty and telling the truth. To mark the occasion with a twist, some of our A.S. staff shared three statements about themselves — two are true, and one is not. Can you tell which is which?

Cole Davis

  1. I have night snorkeled with giant manta rays off the Kona coast of Hawaii! I was lucky enough to share this experience with my wife on our honeymoon.
  2. In the last year, I ran two full marathons: Surf City Marathon in Huntington Beach & Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in San Diego.
  3. I have visited over 25 National Parks, most of which were in the U.S. along with a few others in Africa and Central America. Picking a favorite is hard but if I had to, I'd choose Serengeti National Park in Tanzania.

Answers

Cole Davis:

I have never run a full marathon. I did run the half marathon for both those races and I think 13 miles at once was enough for me!

Sean Stouffer:

I did not play baseball in college, didn't even make it past tryouts in high school. However, I love watching it, and my previous job was with the Padres.

Eric Moreno:

My family has never owned horses. We used to live on a ranch that had horses though and had fun interacting with them frequently, as their pasture was right outside of our front yard.

Ai Kuwayama:

I’ve actually never been to Comic Con. Tickets are tough to get — still hoping to make it one day!

Mohammad Hamed Rasooli:

I can't play any instruments at all.

Adrian Sanchez:

Although I did play on the SDSU Club Baseball Team for four years as a starting pitcher, I did not win a national championship; the team won it a year before I joined.

June Barreras:

Although I did see Keanu Reeves walk into an elevator, I never shared that elevator ride with him. I would have DEFINITELY froze if he spoke to me.

Karla Gonzalez:

Comic Con is not my favorite event. When I worked on Comic Con operations, it was a massive undertaking by everyone involved. We were proud of our work but celebrated the move out with applause and relief.

Square pieces of felt with question marks on them.

Crue Contreras

Crue Contreras

Viejas Arena Events Supervisor

Hello! My name is Crue Contreras and I'm thrilled to be joining A.S. as a new Event Supervisor at Viejas Arena and Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre. I am a new SDSU alum, recently graduating in May of 2025 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Management. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to take on this new role and provide value to A.S.

I am originally from a small town in Humboldt County in Northern California, but I have loved living in San Diego for the past four years. Over the course of my time as an undergraduate, I became involved in SDSU Athletics, working as an Event Staff Lead, where I fell in love with the excitement of events.

When I'm not working you can find me outside, sitting on the beach, playing sports or hiking. I am a huge sports fan, I love watching and playing baseball, basketball and football, with some of my favorite teams being the Giants, Lakers and 49ers, along with SDSU sports of course.

A.S. Book Club

Summer is the perfect time to pick up a good book and start an adventure. Books can take you to fascinating, unexpected places and the A.S. Book Club has certainly been on quite a few interesting journeys lately.

Recently, members joined an unlikely detective duo — a father and his ex-daughter-in-law — as they unraveled a murder involving a world-famous author and a suspiciously large bag of money. The Club then traveled to Maine’s corrupt and unforgiving Shawshank State Penitentiary to explore prison life and witness a mysterious escape. After that, they met Don, an oddly charming and socially awkward genetics professor on a quest to find true love, armed with science and logic.

Here’s how the Club rated those books (1 to 5 stars):

  • We Solve Murders
    by Richard Osman
    4.4
  • Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption
    by Stephen King
    5.0
  • The Rosie Project
    by Graeme Simsion
    4.9

Those are just a few of the fantastic stories that the A.S. Book Club has enjoyed.

So, what’s next?

They’re heading into a fantasy dungeon — one that doubles as the set of a wildly popular intergalactic reality TV show. Expect exploding goblins, magical potions, drug-dealing llamas and even a prize-winning show cat, Princess Donut. This isn’t your average game show. It’s all happening in the July book selection: “Dungeon Crawler Carl” by Matt Dinniman.

And there’s more!

On the A.S. Book Club website, you’ll find a variety of books that club members are voting on to decide what to read next. The stories range from the imaginative to the unbelievable — check them out.

If you enjoy reading books or listening to the audio versions, we invite you to join the A.S. Book Club! For all the details, visit the Club’s website.
