Georgia on Their Minds
SDSU Rugby Tours the Country of Georgia

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of U.S./Georgian diplomatic relations, the San Diego State University Rugby team was presented the opportunity to represent the United States on a goodwill rugby tour March 28-April 3, 2017. The tour served as an opportunity to promote higher education; build U.S./Georgia friendship by visits with schoolchildren and the community at large; and to increase awareness of Georgia and the growth of SDSU Georgia. SDSU has a campus in the city of Tbilisi. A rugby team was selected for this prestigious honor because rugby is similar to the ancient Georgian sport of Lelo.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Alex Lichtig, SDSU Head Coach and Austin Switzer, SDSU Captain, appeared on a live Georgian morning television show to speak about the tour and overall team experience.
  • The SDSU rugby team played in a match against the Devebi Men's Club at Lelo Arena Stadium. SDSU defeated Devebi, 55-14, and became the first team in history to play in an amateur match between the U.S. and Georgia.
  • The team toured the cities of Tbilisi and Gori, and the SDSU Georgia Campus at Tbilisi State University.
  • The team visited the Youth Camp for Internally Displaced Person Settlement (IDPs), the home of 100s of families displaced during the 2008 Georgia and Russian war. Where they hosted a basic skills youth rugby camp for children ranging from 5-15 years of age.
  • They made recruitment visits to SDSU Georgia "feeder" high schools, where students were provided the opportunity to learn about the SDSU STEM majors. One visit included a scholarship announcement ceremony for a student selected to receive full funding to study abroad in San Diego.
  • They hosted a rugby clinic for Wounded Warriors at the Ministry of Defense.
  • The team also attended numerous receptions and dinners, including one at the U.S. Ambassador's Residence.

QUOTES

"Traveling to Georgia will be one of the most memorable experiences of my life. The opportunity to play the sport I love while representing my country fills me with pride, however nothing will compare to the friendships we established with the people of Georgia."

Austin Switzer, Sport Club Executive President, Flyhalf, Captain

"The tour of Georgia was truly special for our student athletes. It was great to take the players out of their element as a team and just enjoy a unique shared experience. The US Embassy, SDSU Georgia, the Georgian Rugby Union and the Government of Georgia rolled out the red carpet for us and enabled us to learn about the local culture, have a positive impact on the local community and understand the massive power of sport across borders."

Alex Lichtig, Head Coach

"Never have I been more proud to represent San Diego State as an alumni than on our tour to Georgia. It was a very special 12-day trip filled with cultural experiences that I and the team will never forget. The hospitality showed by the Georgian people was something I haven't often experienced. It was great to see the team's response to representing our university and our country in Georgia."

Kalei Konrad, Assistant Coach

"The Rugby Tour to the country of Georgia was a trip of a lifetime. We got to experience first hand the wonderful culture and gratitude that the Georgians displayed during our trip. Our team had the opportunity to hold a rugby practice to teach little kids a few rugby drills. Teaching Rugby to the youth had been the most memorable moment at my time in Georgia. All the kids were eager to learn and always had a smile on their face. They say that the future is in the hands of the youth and I believe that Georgia will continue to prosper not only in Rugby but as a Country."

Esmat Wardak, Scrumhalf

"It was an honor and a privilege to represent SDSU and America overseas and play a rugby match that celebrated 25 years of US-Georgian Relationships. It was a once in a lifetime experience being able to meet and play/teach rugby to IDPs (Internally Displaced Person), eat delicious Georgian food and engage in Georgian culture. I will cherish this experience as long as I live."

Ari Flink, Fullback

"It was amazing to see first hand just how powerful sport can be. It took us thousands of miles across the globe and instantly gave us a common interest with the Georgian people. We were hosted by the kindest and most welcoming people I have ever met. This cultural experience broadened our knowledge of the importance of our friendship with Georgia as a university and a country."

John Raby, Flanker

Chimezie Ebirekwe

  1. What is your name and title?

  2. Most people don’t know that I like to...
... Re-watch animated films that I grew up watching, like Monsters Inc. and Jimmy Neutron.
  3. What is your favorite place or thing to do on the SDSU campus?
My favorite place to go on campus is Aztec Lanes because I use it to relieve stress before or after I take an exam.
  4. If you could go back or forward in time, where would you go and why?
I would go back to when I got on my first big ride at an amusement park because that is when I first fell in love with roller coasters.
  5. When you order a drink at Starbucks, how many words are in the description of your drink and what are they?
"Can I get a large regular/iced coffee with two shots of espresso, and one pump of white chocolate mocha? My name is C-H-I-M."

Vanessa Girard

  1. What is your name and title?
Vanessa Monique Girard, Executive Vice President.
  2. Most people don’t know that I like to...
... Listen to podcasts of TED talks while I workout or drive long distances.
  3. What is your favorite place or thing to do on the SDSU campus?
My favorite spot on campus is 100% the student union. On a beautiful sunny day, I love to grab a seat in a comfy chair and read a book, do some homework, or even just close my eyes and meditate for a few minutes. I love being in the student union because it just brings joy to my day to stop and look around and remember how much I have to be grateful for. It rejuvenates me!
  4. If you could go back or forward in time, where would you go and why?
I would definitely go back in time, not forward because I would want the future to be kept a mystery. However, with the past, I would love to go back to when I was a little girl, probably around the age of three, to relive my childhood years with the 21-year old mind I have now; not to change anything, just to simply relive it and enjoy my youth.
  5. When you order a drink at Starbucks, how many words are in the description of your drink and what are they?
My New Year's resolution this year was to give up coffee, so now I am a tea connoisseur! At Starbucks I order a Jasmine Green Tea (hot) or an Iced Black Tea. When I order the green tea I always ask, "Can I have two honeys on the side?" because for some reason it just doesn't taste as right when they put the honey in, so I do it myself! When I order the Iced Black tea I always say, "Low ice and no sweetener please!" I would say usually 9 words in my description, including the please and thank you of course!

Carmel Alon

  1. What is your name and title?
Carmel Alon, Vice President of External Relations.
  2. Most people don’t know that I like to...
... Play piano when I stressed out.
  3. What is your favorite place or thing to do on the SDSU campus?
My favorite place on campus is the student union. I enjoy grabbing lunch or resting in between classes in the beautiful open atmosphere.
  4. If you could go back or forward in time, where would you go and why?
I would go back to the Roaring 20s. During that time there were many great advancements and social/political change. I would love to experience the daily life of living through that thriving era.
  5. When you order a drink at Starbucks, how many words are in the description of your drink and what are they?
    3 words. Iced caramel macchiato.

Hayden Willis

  1. What is your name and title?
    D. Hayden Willis, Vice President of Financial Affairs.
  2. Most people don’t know that I like to...
... Golf. I have been playing since I was 13 years old. Couldn't shoot my age then, still can't but the goal is to shoot my age someday.
  3. What is your favorite place or thing to do on the SDSU campus?
My favorite place on campus is East Commons. I love food, so you could find me there practically everyday freshman year. Rubio’s and Panda Express were about 70% of my diet.
  4. If you could go back or forward in time, where would you go and why?
I would go back in time, specifically to the Roaring '20s. I honestly don't know much about the 1920s, but if it's anything like The Great Gatsby depicted it, sign me up.
  5. When you order a drink at Starbucks, how many words are in the description of your drink and what are they?
    Three: Grande iced coffee.

Chris Thomas

  1. What is your name and title?
Chris Thomas, Vice President of University Affairs.
  2. Most people don’t know that I like to...
... Cook whenever I get the chance because I always love seeing the end product and knowing that everything I used was organic and fresh. When it turns out tasting amazing well that's just a plus to the situation!
  3. What is your favorite place or thing to do on the SDSU campus?
I love going to the Aztec Recreation Center and being able to workout and forget about everything because it always helps me relieve my stress after a long day of classes or meetings.
  4. If you could go back or forward in time, where would you go and why?
I would love to go back to when I was about 3-5 years old because life was so much easier and carefree. All I had to worry about was when my next nap was or what the alphabet was. Now I have to learn all these complicated chemical equations which might as well be another alphabet.
  5. When you order a drink at Starbucks, how many words are in the description of your drink and what are they?
Too many... but actually there are way too many words... on my long days I usually get a Venti Starbucks Double Shot on ice with caramel! However, I sometimes get just a Pikes Place Coffee and call it a day!
