Bowling ENS Instructor

Under the direction of the AS/SDSU Aztec Lanes Coordinator, the Aztec Lanes Bowling Instructor will follow through on the below mentioned responsibilities. The Aztec Lanes Bowling Instructor is responsible for teaching the Exercise and Nutritional Sciences Beginning and Intermediate Bowling Credit Classes. Becoming an integral member of a hard working team of full-time and part-time staff within Aztec Recreation, he/she should possess the ability to work independently and as a team member. This individual’s work will have emphasis on teaching the rules and skills to allow an individual to successfully participate in recreational play. This individual should possess the willingness and flexibility to work with and promote the diverse instructional needs of the San Diego State University students and Aztec Recreation members are met while emphasizing a safe, positive, and educational environment.


  • Instruct registered participants in basic skills, rules, and strategy
  • Develop and implement appropriate lesson plans, syllabus, and learning outcomes
  • Inspect classroom/program environment and equipment to ensure safety, handling emergencies according to established procedures
  • Complete administrative tasks such as skill assessment of participants, attendance, and grade submission
  • Ensures customer service standards are met; responds to physical, virtual, and verbal comment cards in a timely manner
  • Have an understanding of the policies and regulations of the facility, Aztec Recreation, and Associated Students and be able to explain and enforce the rules to inquiring members and participants
  • Become an important member in the Emergency Action Plan if an incident were to occur
  • Have knowledge of the mission and goals of Aztec Recreation and the Associated Students and demonstrates a commitment to achieving them
  • Ensures all class cancellations are communicated promptly by contacting all participants/professional staff along with posting notifications in the appropriate areas
  • Assist with other relevant duties as assigned


Position is supervised by the Aztec Lanes Coordinator. Further interactions may include other full-time staff within Aztec Recreation, including, but not limited to, Recreation Director, Associate Director of Programs, marketing photographer and videographer, and Aztec Lanes Attendants, Leads, and Pinsetter Mechanics.

  • Evidence of, and ability to articulate, a strong, current, practical knowledge of the sport of bowling
  • Previous participation in and teaching of instructional courses preferred
  • Ability to instruct beginning and intermediate level courses
  • Must be able to physically lead and demonstrate the skill and/or activity
  • Strong oral and written communication skills required
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people effectively and diplomatically; must be able to work one-on-one and with groups as many as 60 people
  • The ability to handle difficult situations involving participants with patience, good judgment, and with diplomacy is expected
  • Must be available to work in the mornings & afternoons (9:30am-2:30pm)
  • Must possess excellent customer service skills, including written and oral communication
  • Must have strong English language skills and the ability to read, write and verbally communicate at a level appropriate to the duties of the position
  • Must possess proficient computer skills; utilize Google Email and Calendar, create reports/presentations utilizing Windows XP, Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint as required/needed
  • Must be willing to work a maximum of 20 hours a week during academic year
  • Must be First Aid and CPR/AED certified prior to hiring

Range I – Starting Rate: $20.00/hour
