Aztec Aquaplex Lifeguard

Description:
Under the supervision of the Aztec Aquaplex Coordinator and Lead Lifeguard, this position is responsible for the safety and well being of the Aztec Aquaplex guests.
- Maintain pool surveillance for their designated coverage zone.
- Actively enforce facility rules and regulations.
- Keeping in mind the 10/20 rule at all times.
- Rescue persons in distress or in danger of drowning.
- Provide emergency care as necessary including but not limited to first aid and CPR.
- Participate in facilities clean-up and maintenance; testing and monitoring water chemistry and temperature when necessary.
- Inspect pool facilities and report any unsafe conditions.
- Respond to questions and inquiries from the public regarding pool regulations, use of facilities and various aquatic programs offered.
- Fill out and maintain daily reports of the facility’s activities and participation numbers.
- Stay alert and guard the safety of facility patrons.
- Open and close pool and related facilities, ensuring the facility is completely unoccupied upon closure, and tarping the pools as required.
- Maintain physical fitness, by swimming and practicing rescue skills.
- Be personally responsible for keeping certifications up to date.
- Help in the daily set-up of the pool, and the set-up and break-down of the facility during special events special events.
- Participate in mandatory monthly in-service trainings.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
RELATIONSHIPS:
Work with the Guest Services staff to help run an efficient facility. Work with the Aquatics Maintenance Engineer as required. Interact with all Campus Recreation employees with a positive attitude.
Education:
Must be enrolled in a minimum of six units at San Diego State University.
Valid American Red Cross Certifications:
- C.P.R. for the Professional Rescuer
- Title 22, First Aid for Public Safety Personnel
- Lifeguard Training r.03
- Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
COMPENSATION:
A.S. Pay Range II, $8.65/hour-$11.39/hour

Aztec Aquaplex Aquatics Instructor
Description:
Under the supervision of the Aquaplex Coordinator and Lifeguard Lead, this position is required to teach the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim programs.
- Make block lesson plans to follow for assigned lessons.
- Maintain the safety of the students and the integrity of the program for the duration of the lesson.
- Test and review future and current students to determine swimming ability and class levels.
- Occasionally, teach private swimming lessons, diving classes and/or synchronized swimming courses.
- Set-up all equipment required for lessons and clean up equipment once lessons are completed for the day.
- Fill out, complete and return all attendance records, logs and report cards in a timely manner to the Lifeguard Lead.
- Help the public by answering questions about the facility and the lessons offered.
- Enter the water to teach all levels of swimming.
- Choose age appropriate games and songs for the class levels taught.
- Perform excellent customer service by being courteous and friendly with all lesson parents.
- Enforce the facility rules and regulations within your class and with all guests and members.
- Attend staff meeting on at least a monthly basis.
- Communicate customer comments, facility issues, policy questions or other important information as appropriate to your supervisor.
- Perform “public relations” duties in the facility; act as liaison to users; if appropriate, identify yourself and greet students, parents and ARC members as they enter and exit the facility.
- Maintain a safe, enjoyable and professional operation by knowing, supporting, and enforcing the rules and regulations of the facility.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Relationships:
This position will have interaction with the other Aquaplex guest services staff, Aquaplex lifeguards and the public on a daily basis. Strict reliability to ensure all classes begin on time is very important.
Qualifications:
This position requires at least one year of experience teaching swim lessons to children aged 6-months to 12-years.
Education:
Must be enrolled in a minimum of six units at San Diego State University.
