A Resolution Opposing SR89 and HR163 and the Reinstitution of the Draft

WHEREAS, Associated Students strives to serve the best interests of the students at San Diego State University, and

WHEREAS, both S 89 is intended to reinstate the draft for persons between the ages of 18 and 26, and

WHEREAS, Associated Students promotes education and higher learning as a key to personal success, and

WHEREAS, being drafted would greatly disrupt a student’s education, and

WHEREAS, Associated Students promotes tolerance for all cultures, races and religions, and S 89 does not provide deferments for conscientious objectors, and

WHEREAS, S 89 is intended to distribute the burden of national defense among all segments of the population, and

WHEREAS, despite said intention, students of low income, students of color and first generation college students would be disproportionately affected by said legislation, and

WHEREAS, the reinstatement of the draft would delay or interrupt the economic advancement of college graduates, and

WHEREAS, S 89 requires resident aliens to serve despite the fact that they do not receive all of the rights and privileges of a U.S. citizen including the right to vote, and

WHEREAS, S 89 does not differentiate between peace time and wartime obligations, now therefore be it

RESOLVED, that the Associated Students stands opposed to involuntary military service and S 89 in its entirety, and be it further

RESOLVED, that the Associated Students directs the Vice President of External Affairs to actively campaign against S 89, and be it further

RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to all San Diego County Congressmen and Congresswomen, the Office of Senator Barbara Boxer, the Office of Senator Dianne Feinstein, the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Office of the Secretary of State and the Office of the President of the United States
