WHEREAS the mission of the Associated Students (AS) of San Diego State University to “create, promote and fund social, cultural and recreational programs in facilities both on campus and in the community, advocate for student interests, provide leadership opportunities, and participate in shared governance,”
WHEREAS the current AS and SDSU non-discrimination statements provide protection for individuals on the basis of actual or perceived sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity and expression, and
WHEREAS the University Senate recently passed a resolution on homophobia and transphobia at SDSU, and
WHEREAS extensive services to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (GLBTQ) students at SDSU are lacking, inconsistent and ineffectively coordinated and promoted, and
WHEREAS the Associated Students and the University will continue to support the Safe Zones Program that has been established at SDSU, and
WHEREAS the Associated Students and the California State Student Association (CSSA) have expressed support for the establishment of GLBTQ services on all California State University campuses including SDSU, and
WHEREAS we are deeply disturbed by the continuing incidents of homophobia and transphobia that occur on campus; therefore, be it
RESOLVED that the University and Associated Students regularly communicate their non-discrimination policies through the sending of an annual notice to all faculty, staff, and students, and to additionally include policies, resources, services and reporting methods available to GLBTQ students and to announce said policies, resources, services and reporting methods at the “New Student Orientation,” and
RESOLVED that the Associated Students, the University, and its’ auxiliaries support the establishment of gender-neutral bathrooms on campus, and a state-funded LGBT Resource Center, and
RESOLVED that the University is encouraged to make all reasonable efforts to promptly address all hate-related incidences that occur on or near campus, or involving members of the SDSU community, and
RESOLVED that copies of this resolution are to be distributed widely, including but not limited to: President Stephen Weber, Vice President of Student Affairs James Kitchen, the University Senate, the University Senate’s Committee on Diversity and Equity, and The Daily Aztec.
