RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE CREATION OF A BICYCLE LANE ON THE SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY CAMPUS
University Affairs Board

WHEREAS,            the Associated Students of San Diego State University is the representative body, and the official voice of the students at San Diego State University; and

WHEREAS,            it is the mission of the Associated Students to represent, serve, and protect the collective interests of students at San Diego State University; and

WHEREAS,            San Diego State University students, who have shown support for the sustainability movement, have expressed their interest in breaking their dependence on motor vehicles as the primary mode of transportation to and from San Diego State University; and

WHEREAS,            the Associated Students of San Diego State University believe that a comprehensive plan to develop and promote the use of a bicycle lane will alleviate the dependence on motor vehicles as the primary source of transportation to and from San Diego State University; and

WHEREAS,            providing alternative transportation possibilities may alleviate the pressure on existing parking infrastructure to meet the current demand of the population of San Diego State University; and

WHEREAS,            the demand for parking spaces will drastically increase with the planned enrollment growth from 35,695 to 44,826 students by the academic year 2024-2025 and greatly exacerbate this current problem; and

WHEREAS,             the Senate Resolution for Sustainability was passed on April 10, 2007, and the use of alternative forms of transportation on and around campus directly supports sustainability practices and carbon neutrality at San Diego State University; and

WHEREAS,             the State of California has adopted Executive Order S-3-055, which recognizes that California is vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and that we must take action to reduce the use of fossil fuels and reduce our carbon footprint; and

WHEREAS,            the lack of bicycle lanes on campus and in the College Area in addition to poor incentive programs discourages the use of zero-emission transportation options such as bicycles for San Diego State University students. Therefore be it

RESOLVED,            the Associated Students of San Diego State University call upon the San Diego State University Senate and President Stephen Weber to set in motion, begin planning, and allocate funds for the development, promotion and eventual implementation of a bicycle lane on the San Diego State University campus; and further be it
           
RESOLVED,   the Associated Students of San Diego State University call upon the San Diego State University Senate and President Stephen Weber to coordinate with the City of San Diego to increase and improve all bike lanes in the surrounding area of the campus and the immediate vicinity of the College Area; and finally be it 

RESOLVED,            that this resolution is to be distributed widely including, but not limited to San Diego State University President Stephen Weber, the San Diego State University Senate and Environment and Safety Committee, the College Area Community Council, and the City of San Diego including Councilmember Jim Madaffer.
