WHEREAS, Associated Students of San Diego State University is committed to “…create, promote and fund social, cultural and recreational programs and facilities both on campus and in the community, advocate for student interests and participate in shared governance…” and otherwise utilize its resources and influence to further the good name and mission of our University, and
WHEREAS, It is the mission of San Diego State University "to impart an appreciation and broad understanding of human experience throughout the world and the ages", including "diverse cultural legacies"; and
WHEREAS, Associated Students upholds San Diego State University’s “Shared Vision” values which include diversity and internationalism, both of which are embodied in the campus’ recognition and appreciation of the Aztec culture, and
WHEREAS, San Diego State University proudly affirms its appreciation of the Aztec Culture and traditions the embodiment of virtues such as strength, valor, and intellectual achievement, while striving to ensure depictions of the Aztec Culture are historically accurate and culturally sensitive, now therefore be it
RESOLVED, Associated Students of San Diego State University affirms its support for the use of historically accurate and culturally sensitive symbols and representations of the Aztec culture, in particular those that engender school pride, student, alumni and community support of student affiliated teams and organizations and overall pride in San Diego State University, and be it further
RESOLVED, That in approving this resolution, the AS Council adjusts its official position on the mascot issue by rescinding Council resolutions: “University Mascot for the 21st Century” and CB F03-2, and be it further
RESOLVED, That Associated Students will use its available resources and influence to preserve this campus’ recognition of the importance of Aztec Culture, and finally be it
RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be forwarded to the University President and the Chair of the University Senate.
