WHEREAS, the San Diego State University Mission Statement states, “the University is primarily responsive to the people of California as well as the needs of the regional, national and international communities it serves. The University also seeks cooperative programs with other institutions of higher education in both the United States and abroad,” and
WHEREAS, in furtherance of its mission, San Diego State University urges all SDSU students to consider a course of study abroad sometime during their undergraduate career, and
WHEREAS, the SDSU Office of International Programs has successfully offered SDSU students the opportunity to study abroad in dozens of international locations including the island of Cyprus, and
WHEREAS, San Diego State University students find the educational opportunity to study in Cyprus a valuable resource in the pursuit of their educational goals, and
WHEREAS, there are multiple public and private universities around the country who currently have exchange programs in Cyprus, including but not limited to the State University of New York at Albany, Iowa State University, University of Tennessee, and Louisiana State University, and
WHEREAS, the island of Cyprus is not currently on the US State Department watch list and may be as safe an international location for studying abroad as most others, and
WHEREAS, the current agreement between San Diego State University and Eastern Mediterranean University is one of a mutual exchange of knowledge; now therefore, be it
RESOLVED, the Associated Students of San Diego State University supports the study abroad programs available to SDSU students in Cyprus, and opposes any efforts by the CSU Board of Trustees to curtail or limit the principle of academic freedom, and be it further
RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to SDSU President Stephen Weber, the SDSU Senate, the SDSU Office of International Programs, the members of the CSU Board of Trustees and the California State Student Association.
