WHEREAS, the Associated Students of San Diego State University is the recognized voice of the student body and advocates the interests of all students of our university; and
WHEREAS, public exposure of the accomplishments of dedicated student athletes and overall Aztec pride is enhanced by regular and accessible media coverage of Aztec athletic events; and
WHEREAS, local and regional television coverage of Aztec athletic events contributes to enhancement of student morale and pride, attracts prospective students, athletes, and faculty/staff, and contributes to the university’s efforts in outreach and cultivation of positive relations with alumni, boosters and friends of the university, and
WHEREAS, broadcast rights for Mountain West Conference (MWC) athletic events contracted to Comcast Corporation and College Sports Television (CSTV) are currently available in only 6 of the 9 MWC media markets, leaving the primary markets and college sports fans in Las Vegas, Dallas/Fort Worth, and San Diego without adequate local/regional broadcast coverage ;and
WHEREAS, broadcast rights and local coverage for 90% of SDSU athletic events are only viewable on The Mountain (the mtn.com) Television Network via CSTV, who is responsible for marketing the local broadcasting rights and privileges to local cable broadcasters; and
WHEREAS, cable companies and satellite networks have failed to consummate a timely agreement with CSTV/Comcast for local broadcast cable rights of “the mtn” in San Diego and the other aforementioned primary media markets, depriving students and fans of the opportunity to view 90% of Aztec athletic events; therefore be it
RESOLVED, the San Diego State University Associated Students strongly urges CSTV, Comcast, cable companies and satellite networks involved in the provision of local broadcast coverage rights in San Diego, Las Vegas, and Dallas/Fort Worth to quickly resolve their differences and restore local viewing access for students and fans for all local university athletic events.
