President James Poet called the meeting to order at 3:35 p.m.

V.   PUBLIC COMMENT

  1. Alex Delino & Kim Guzman – Cross Cultural Center Advisory Board: The Cross Cultural Center has been a part of SDSU for five years and would like the Council’s opinion of the expectations from the Center.
  2. Erin Steva – CalPIRG: Erin addressed the Council on textbook affordability and the Textbook Affordability Act SB 832.

VI.   SPECIAL RECOGNITIONS AND PRESENTATIONS

  1. John Browning, Chief of SDSU Police Department: Chief Browning gave an update on recent campus incidents and provided his contact information to the Council.
  2. Jeff Altshuler, McGladrey & Pullen; Susan Heiser, Associate Director; Sandra Keshka, Controller: Jeff, Susan, and Sandra reviewed the AS Annual Financial Audit and answered questions from the Council.

XI.   EXECUTIVE REPORTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

  1. President: James reported on the following:
    1. James is part of a collaborative effort to reorganize the PIC (President’s Intercollegiate Council).
    2. James has been conversing with the IVC campus in regards to showcasing their campus to our students and educating the Main Campus students on what happens in IVC.
    3. A survey is being compiled to rank our AS among other college-level student governments.
  2. Executive Vice President: Jameson reported on the following:
    1. AS Board & Committee orientations for chairs and advisors have been completed. Orientation material included AS Dollars, the attendance policy, etc. A reminder that College Council Charters need to be turned into the AS office.
    2. Athletics: Red & Black Games will be focused on football, men’s and women’s soccer, and tennis.
    3. ModernSpace Student Committee will meet on October 2. All Council members are welcome to attend.
    4. Facilities Board is off to a great start. Vice Chair nominations will be next week.
    5. Free Student Ticket link is up on the AS website!
    6. Gavelcide will begin next Thursday.
    7. Unfortunately, Camp Stevens was affected in the Julian forest fires.
  3. Vice President of External Affairs: Jeremy reported on the following:
    1. Jeremy was elected to sit on the CACC as an Executive Voting Member. This is the first time in eight years a student has held a seat (excluding the AS President’s Designee).
    2. CSSA San Diego was this last weekend. It went very well, thanks to Jen and Ben for all of their help. CSSA took a stance to oppose the CSU Executive Compensation increases which were approved today by the CSU Board of Trustees.
    3. Please keep spreading the message of FTF. The Facebook group is almost at 1,000 members. Go join if you haven’t and make sure you invite all of your friends.
    4. Education Consortium: there will be a presentation to update and inform the Council in October.
    5. The Student Resource Center will be Thursday, September 27 from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. on the Free Speech Steps. Please encourage people to go out.
  4. Vice President of Finance: Justin reported on the following:
    1. College Councils need to have their budget allocations in by Friday, October 5 for Finance Board approval.
    2. AS Gives Back poster is in the works and should be hanging in Aztec Center in the first weeks of October. Justin and the AS Gives Back Director will be attending student organization meetings to promote it.
  5. Vice President of University Affairs: Mike reported on the following:
    1. There will be a press conference on textbook affordability tomorrow. Mike will be speaking in favor of the Textbook Affordability Bill. The conference is tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. on the Free Speech Steps. UAB is looking to write a resolution in support of this bill.
    2. CACC went well, we are getting information and flyers ready for the Student Resource Center Clinic on Thursday, September 27.
    3. UAB will be nominating and electing its Vice-Chairs next week.
  6. President Pro Tempore: Joy reported on the following:
    1. Tabling and board & committee interview requirements are due this Friday, September 21 at 4:00 p.m.
    2. Please continue participating in extra credit, and do not forget to fill out the extra credit forms. They are available in the GAO.
  7. Executive Director: Dan referred to his written report (attached).
  8. University Senate’s Designee: Dr. Cezar Ornatowski reported on the following.
    1. The new Freedom of Expression Policy was approved by the President.
    2. The Senate will discuss a resolution to abolish football at SDSU.
    3. The Constitution and Bylaws Committee is looking for a student member.
    4. The Senate will discuss the Academic Calendar for 2008-2009.
    5. The Senate will discuss the “Bounce Back Seminar,” a new 1.0 unit class for students on academic probation.
  9. University President’s Designee: Tim Rupe reported on the following:
    1. Development staff, Financial Services staff, and Susan Heiser, among others, are looking into a simplified step-by-step process to alert student organizations of what is appropriate for fundraising.
    2. Community Service Fair paired with Sustainability Day was a success.
    3. Student Organizations: moving into a new phase to do event approvals and renewal processes, trying to update information online.
    4. Panhellenic recruitment is an incredible success.

XII.   REPORTS OF COUNCIL MEMBERS

  1. Teodoro “Junior” Martinez-LGBTSU:
    1. This Friday, September 21 at 7:00 p.m. we will be having our Diva’s Nite Out event. This event will take place in the Backdoor Theatre.
    2. On Thursday, October 11 at 6:00 p.m. we will be having our 15th “Big Gay BBQ” at Scripps Cottage.
  2. Eric Wacenske-College of Sciences:
    1. It’s been a slow week for science.
  3. Katherine Hunt-WRC:
    1. The WRC will be holding an orientation meeting for anyone interested in learning more about the organization or getting involved. It will be held in the Women’s Studies Conference Room on the 3rd floor of Arts and Letters.
  4. Alexander Jarman-GSA:
    1. Reminder that GRADSplash is this Saturday at MBAC from 1:00-4:00 p.m. This is a FREE event!
  5. Laura Congress & Liz Ring-College of Health & Human Services:
    1. College of HHS Council is still looking for council members. Contact Liz or Laura if you are interested.
    2. The NursesNow Career Fair is tomorrow, Thursday, September 20 in the Hepner Hall Quad.
  6. Julia Rosenberg-Panhellenic Association:
    1. Panhellenic recruitment was very successful! About 580 girls joined sororities on campus.
    2. Delta Zeta will be holding information sessions on the following dates:
      Wednesday, September 19 in Cholula
      Tuesday, September 25 in Scripps Cottage
      Thursday, September 27 in Casa Real
      Recruitment will be October 2-5 in the Tula. All events begin at 7:00 p.m.
    3. Visit sdsu.deltazeta.org to get an application. Please spread the word to your organizations!
  7. James Duffy-Honors Council:
    1. Please contact James Duffy at quantum.electric@sbcglobal.net or (760) 402-1116 to participate in the Blanket Drive benefiting the poor families of Tijuana. There will be a meeting concerning this event next Tuesday, September 25 at 7:00 p.m. in the Golden Key Honour Society office through the Bowling Alley, to the right, through the double doors, 159C.
