October 31, 2007 – COUNCIL CHAMBERS – 3:00 P.M.

I.            CALL TO ORDER:
            President James Poet called the meeting to order at 3:33 p.m.

II.            ROLL CALL:

SPECIAL RECOGNITIONS AND PRESENTATIONS:

 

A.            Public Safety Update-John Browning, Chief of SDSU Police Department: Chief Browning announced the Annual Teddy Bear Drive sponsored by San Diego County Law Enforcement.  Their goal is to gather 10,000 bears (bears must be new and have a tag attached).  Deadline is December 11, 2007 and they will be taken to Children’s Hospital.  He also reminded everyone to stay safe this Halloween.  If you ever feel unsafe, please call University Police at (619) 594-1991. 

B.            Love Library Update-Connie Dowell, Dean of Library and Information Access: Dean Dowell gave a brief presentation and explained the goals set for the Library.  She also answered questions from Council members.

INTRODUCTION OF NEW LEGISLATIVE MATTERS: NONE.

 

 

EXECUTIVE REPORTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS:

 

A.            President: James reported on the following:
1.            Please respond to the 360 feedback.
2.            Execs will be taking our SDSU team captains to lunch.
3.            There is a CFAC meeting on Friday.
4.            We donated supplies to evacuees at Qualcomm.
5.            PIC will be rescheduled due to the fires last week.
6.            We will be having a fire victim relief meeting tomorrow to have a unified relief effort.

B.            Executive Vice President: Jameson had no report.

C.            Vice President of External Affairs: Jeremy reported on the following:
1.            EAB is working on community service projects to benefit the wildfires including a Firefighters Auction, thank you letters, gift baskets, and physical clean-up efforts.
2.            Lobby Corps will be heading up the Administrative Citation issue by lobbying Mayor Sanders and his staff.
3.            Student Resource Center will be next Thursday, November 8th at 12:00 p.m. and will focus on recruiting volunteers for the community service projects.
4.            The Rooming House Ordinance has had changes made to it that could negatively impact students, so I will be working with that and have further updates.
5.            The vote/voter registration campaigns are under way with the theme of “I Will Vote” and marketing materials are being developed.

D.            Vice President of Finance: Justin reported on the following:
1.            Justin has visited a number of Greek organizations regarding AS Gives Back.  He will soon make visits to the College Councils.
                        2.            Justin has to leave early for an audition in LA.

            E.            Vice President of University Affairs: Mike reported on the following:
1.            We are working on doing advertising in the Daily Aztec and reaching out to the student organizations and clubs to try and fill the student Senate Committee seats.
2.            GNP flyer has been completed.  We are continuing to work with the community to canvas the neighborhoods and distribute the new GNP flyer.

F.               President Pro Tempore: Joy reported on the following:
1.            Council member requirements are due November 14th.

G.            Executive Director: Tyler Wilson referred to the written report (attached) and he also presented a powerpoint slideshow to the Council.

H.            University Senate’s Designee: Dr. Cezar Ornatowski reported on the following:
1.            The Senate meets on Tuesday and the infamous football resolution is back on the agenda.

I.            University President’s Designee: Tim Rupe reported on the following:
1.            Dollars for Scholars, a 5K walk hosted by UCSD will be this coming Saturday, November 3rd. This event provides money for scholarships for high school students.  The walk will be sponsored by SDSU next year.  If interested in serving on the committee, let Tim know.

XII.            REPORTS OF COUNCIL MEMBERS:
A.            Eric Wacenske (Socrates)-College of Sciences:
1.            College of Sciences’ breakfast table at the Breast Cancer Walk was a big success!  We served over 150 walkers with bagels, cupcakes, donuts, and coffee.
2.            Happy 22nd birthday, Deena & Eric!!  Birthday buddies J

Richard Pelayo-AB Samahan:

 

1.            Samahan brought it!  All hail our homecoming victory!!  (Try again next year, Ambos).

Liz Ring-College of HHS:

 

1.            Three of our students have been affected by the fire and we are currently trying to raise money for them.  One of them is a nursing student and two are social work majors.  We are also working to start up our Faculty-Student Mentoring Program again.  Happy Halloween!

D.            Megan McCoy-Residence Hall Association:
1.            Tunnel of Oppression starts this Sunday and runs through Wednesday, November 7th!
           
E.            Alexi Biener-Jewish Student Union:
1.            Another reminder about Mitzvah Day on November 18th!  Get involved and make a difference all over San Diego.  Ask me or call (619) 583-6080 and anyone at Hillel can answer your questions! J

            F.            Katherine Hunt-Andrea O’Donnell Women’s Resource Center:
1.            Love Your Body Day, Friday, November 9 from 12:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. in Casa Real.  There will be Yoga for Newbies, belly dancing lessons, a lecture and short video on media and body image, a speaker on eating disorders, free healthy food, and more.
2.            Gray Rape lecture and discussion will be November 15th at 7:30 p.m.

            G.            Veronica Vences-United Sorority and Fraternity Council:
1.            Nu Alpha Kappa (NAK) is having a taco sale on Thursday, November 1st.  Alpha Pi Sigma is collecting clothes and any other donations for a children’s orphanage – last day to turn in is Friday, November 2nd (email: vero18psvf@yahoo.com).
