I.   CALL TO ORDER

President James Poet called the meeting to order at 3:35 p.m.

IIII.   MODIFICATIONS TO AGENDA

It was moved and seconded to approve the agenda of October 10, 2007.

It was moved and seconded to move the 2nd reading of #CB F07-02 “Resolution in Support of the Signing of the College Textbooks Affordability Act, SB 832,” to an action item in the agenda.

IV.   APPROVAL OF PREVIOUS MINUTES

It was moved and seconded to approve the minutes from October 3, 2007.

V.   PUBLIC COMMENT

Chris Mullin-American Medical Students Association: Chris spoke about the State Children’s Health Insurance Program and encouraged Council members to call their senators and/or representatives and request they vote in favor of SCHIP.

VI.   SPECIAL RECOGNITIONS AND PRESENTATIONS

  1. Dr. Tom Scott, Vice President for Research and Dean of Graduate Affairs: Dr. Scott gave a brief personal background and explained the goals set for the Research Division.
  2. The Education Consortium of San Diego County Presentation – Andrea Guerrero, Equality Alliance: Andrea gave a presentation and is encouraging the A-G curriculum adoption in high school districts across the county.     

VII.   APPOINTMENTS AND RESIGNATIONS

    It was moved and seconded to approve the Appointments and Resignations List as attached.

    James administered the Oath of Office to Veronica Vences, the new United Sorority and Fraternity Council representative.

X.   INTRODUCTION OF NEW LEGISLATIVE MATTERS

#CB F07-02 Resolution in Support of the Signing of the College Textbooks Affordability Act, SB 832 (Action):

It was moved and seconded to approve #CB F07-02, “Resolution in Support of the Signing of the College Textbooks Affordability Act, SB 832”

WACENSKE/DESANTIS                CARRIED

It was moved and seconded to amend the resolution as follows:

Change the title to “Resolution in Support of Governor Schwarzenegger Signing the College Textbooks Affordability Act, SB832”

Making Line 18 into the third “Whereas,” reading:

WHEREAS, The average student spends over $900 on books each year; and

The resolution was approved as amended.

XI.   EXECUTIVE REPORTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

  1. President: James reported on the following:
    1. AS Staff Awards last week honoring staff members went very well.
    2. James is excited to have a full PCab.
    3. James gave updates on AP&P Committee meeting.
    4. Congratulations to Council Member of the Month, Daniel Matthews!
  2. Executive Vice President: Jameson reported on the following:
    1. Awards Committee met this morning and reviewed the Awards Code.  Discussed possible themes for the Aztec Achievement Awards.  If you would like to suggest any changes the deadline is October 24th.  Awards Committee meets on Thursdays at 9:00 a.m. in Aztlán.
    2. Working on Homecoming banner for the game.
    3. Working on a spirit box in collaboration with Aztec Shops which would be filled with things every SDSU student should have.
    4. Updating Enrollment Services recruitment video.
    5. Still need an AS Council member for the C&PS Advisory Board.
    6. BOO! Parade float construction will occur next week.
    7. As far as Gavelcide goes, make sure you check your email everyday.
  3. Vice President of External Affairs: Jeremy reported on the following:
    1. Student trustee search is still going on.  Deadline is Wednesday, October 17th at 5:00 p.m.
    2. SRC tomorrow from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.  Please come out to show your support.
    3. CACC meeting tonight at 7:00 p.m. at the College-Rolando Library.  We will be discussing administrative citation and presenting Fix the Fine.
    4. There is a City Council meeting on October 17th. They will be discussing the administrative fine.
    5. Community service: looking to set-up events within the College Area.
    6. EAB retreat is postponed.
    7. Ed Consort was passed.
  4. Vice President of Finance: Justin reported on the following:
    1. There was no Finance Board meeting last Monday. 
    2. Areas where we have had controversy regarding the audit are all cleaned up.
    3. College Council budgets all came in on time, budget hearings this Monday.
    4. Justin will advertise AS Gives Back to all fraternity/sorority meetings next week.
    5. Justin will be doing follow-ups to all College Councils.
    6. GreenLOVE meeting tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. in Quetzalcoatl, everyone who is interested is welcome to attend.
  5. Vice President of University Affairs: Mike reported on the following:
    1. CACC is tonight at 7:00 p.m. at the College-Rolando Library.  An update on the GNP and how we have been responding to the phone calls received through the hotline will be presented.
    2. Mike is still updating the Senate Committees roster so he can fill it with students that are going to actually attend the meetings.
    3. Channel 5 CW interview with Mike to advertise the GNP will air Sunday at 10:30 p.m.
  6. President Pro Tempore: Joy reported on the following:
    1. Deadline for bylaw amendments is October 24th.
    2. Council member requirements are due November 14th.
  7. Executive Director: Dan referred to his written report (attached).
  8. University Senate’s Designee: Dr. Cezar Ornatowski reported on the following:
    1. Resolution regarding football has been referred to the Senate Executive Committee.  They will meet on Tuesday.
    2. Textbook Resolution: Cezar will take copies to the Senate Executive Committee.
    3. The Senate is asking for feedback from graduate Business students regarding the $210/unit fee for MBA students.
  9. University President’s Designee: Tim Rupe reported on the following:
    1. Congratulations to the Homecoming Court!

XII.   REPORTS OF COUNCIL MEMBERS

  1. Erika Cueva-MEChA:
    1. Friday, October 12th, MEChA will be hosting a Día de la Raza event on the Free Speech Steps.  Expect: Knowledge Speakers and Danza Azteca.  How exciting!  12PM, October 12 at the Free Speech Steps.  Join us!!!
  2. Eric Wacenske-College of Sciences:
    1. We urge everyone to get involved with the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (S-CHIP).  Please call or write your representatives so the bill will pass!
    2. CSSC will be serving a free breakfast at the ACS Breast Cancer Walk on Saturday, October 21st.  Meet us at the big Laurel tree before the walk.
  3. Megan McCoy-RHA:
    1. Still looking for an E-Board position.  Hoping to get one by this Friday so they can be a NCCIT at PACURH.  GO FROGS! Contact Megan at sdsurha.prez@gmail.com if interested.
  4. Alexander Jarman-PSFA, NGA:
    1. PSFA: Paul Klotz beat out 53 other combatants in a gladiator match in a snake pit to win a seat on Homecoming Court.
    2. Next Generation of Artists: NGA Film Nite tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. in room 512 of the Art Department.  Free films and free pizza!!!!
  5. Sarah Rossetto-PSFA:
    1. Paul Klotz succeeded in a grueling competition last Friday and is now one of seven men on the 2007 Homecoming Court.  Woop woop PSFA nominee!
  6. Richard Pelayo-AB Samahan:
    1. AB Samahan is gonna ROCK OUT next week at Homecoming!
    2. Happy Birthday to me!
  7. Liz Rodriguez-AChA:
    1. Café con Chicanas: October 17th from 5:00-6:00 p.m. at the Cross Cultural Center.
    2. Backpack Drive-Donate a backpack: October 1st-31st.  Boxes will be outside the AChA office and Cross Cultural Center. *Backpacks must be new.  It is optional to fill it up with school supplies.
  8. Laura Congress-HHS:
    1. The California Nursing Students’ Association (CNSA) will be sending eight students to the Annual State Convention in San Jose, CA from October 12th-14th. 
  9. Katherine Hunt-WRC:
    1. The WRC will have a team walking and volunteering at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk.  It will be October 21st at 8:30 a.m. in Balboa Park.  There are lots of students and several teams from SDSU walking so come out and show your support!  If you want to volunteer at the event, email me at wrc_sdsu@yahoo.com
  10. Alexi Biener-JSU:
    1. Mitzvah Day is around the corner, November 18th from around 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Come join SDSU and our local community by going out and volunteering at various agencies throughout San Diego. Want to help organize/plan or if you need more information, call Hannah Berman at 619.583.6080 or come and talk to me! J
  11. Haley Anderson-PSFA:
    1. PSFA continues to exemplify excellence as one of its members, Paul Klotz, was elected as a member of Homecoming Court!  Congratulations Paul!
    2. PSFA is excited to announce that Paul Klotz was chosen to honor and represent the greatest college EVER for Homecoming Court!  Let’s hope he’s not A-Paul-ing and doesn’t become a Klutz and trips on the field during half-time J.  Break a leg, Paul!
