October 11, 2006 – COUNCIL CHAMBERS – 3:00 P.M.

I.         CALL TO ORDER:

            President Matt Keipper called the meeting to order at 3:30 p.m.

 

II.        ROLL CALL:

V.            PUBLIC COMMENT:

A.            Shoes of Hope – Richard Nhieu, United Nations Association of San Diego:

Richard announced his organization’s event “Shoes of Hope” for Novemeber 16th at the International Village and November 17th at Scripps Cottage. It will be a shoe painting and donation event that will include USD, UCSD, and SDSU. Richard hopes to send shoes to Africa for orphans, reformed child soldiers, and child HIV victims.

 

VI.          SPECIAL RECOGNITIONS AND PRESENTATIONS:

A.   Modern Space Update – Amanda Venegas, Chair of the Modern Space Committee:

Amanda presented the preliminary results from the Modern Space Webportal Survey. She then entertained questions about the survey results and progress of the proposed expansion.

XI.          EXECUTIVE REPORTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS:

A.            President: Matt reported on the following:

1.         University House tonight! Carpooling list with the directions went around to council members.

2.         The Executive 360° Reviews will be going out tomorrow (10/12). Please take the time to evaluate and provide constructive criticism for your fellow A.S. Executive Officers.

3.         Matt will pass-around a sign-up sheet at the next Council Meeting for Student Org 'Red & Black Events'. The Daily Aztec would like Student Orgs to write an article containing a brief description, current issues, and a preview of its largest event of the year (Red & Black Event).

 

B.             Executive Vice President: Brian reported on the following:

1.         Midnight Madness Basketball Exhibition is this Friday, October 13th and doors open at 6:00PM. There will be tons of sponsors, tons of giveaways, and tons of fun!!!

2.         Boo Parade volunteers needed – builders and riders.

3.         Expansion Committee meeting is this Monday, October 16th at 11:00AM in the Presidential Suite.

4.         Building Services Manager Recruitment is going well and we anticipate announcing the position filled soon.

5.         Winter Projects: Montezuma Lounge Renovation, courtyard concrete grinding, and air handler drain pan replacement.

 

C.        Vice President of External Affairs: Khouloud reported on the following:

            1.         Go Voter Registration! We have until October 23rd to register voters.

 

D.        Vice President of Finance: Tyler reported on the following:

1.         Mandatory for organizations (not under a college council)

·      Advisor and President (or VP Finance) must attend one of the following:

October 20 – 1:00PM or 4:00PM in the Arena Meeting Center

October 27 – 1:00PM or 4:00PM in Calmecac

                        2.         Finance Board visited the Mission Bay Aquatic Center this week.

 

E.         Vice President of University Affairs: John reported on the following:

1.         Thank you for going back to your organizations and bringing valuable feedback about MySpot.

2.         Free Speech Committee meets this Monday, October 16, 2006.

3.         University Senate met yesterday, October 10th.

4.         Sign up for Good Neighbor Program!

 

F.       President Pro Tempore: Garrett reported on the following:

1.         Turn-in official requirements check-off sheet.

2.         Council requirements are due December 4th, 2006.

 

G.        Executive Director: Dan Cornthwaite referred to Jeremy Ehrlich to read his written report (attached).

           

H.        University Senate’s Designee:

1.         The Senate passed a resolution in favor of Proposition 1D that calls on faculty, staff and students to vote for Prop 1D.

2.         The Senate approved the 2007-2008 Academic Calendar.

3.         The Senate discussed the report from the Retention and Graduation Subcommittee and the Undergraduate Council.

 

I.          University President’s Designee: Dr. Darlene Willis referred to Dr. Tanis Starck and Dr. James Kitchen to report on the following:

1.         Dr. Starck reported on an amazing opportunity for students on campus to develop their leadership skills though a retreat hosted by the Center for Student Involvement on November 3rd and 4th. The title of the retreat is “Leadership in 3D: Dream, Dare, Do!”

 

XII.     REPORTS OF COUNCIL MEMBERS:

A.        Alex Delino – Asian Pacific Student Alliance:

1.         APSA is sponsoring “Asian Stories: Book 3” on October 13th at 8:45PM and October 17th at 4:30PM. Again, meetings are continuing in Backdoor at 12:30PM on Tuesdays.

2.         Our membership is growing!

 

            B.        Corine Caloca – College of Education:

1.         The meeting for the College of Education will be on Wednesday, October 25, 2006 in Aztlán at 2:00PM. See you there!

2.         The annual career fair “Explore, Experience, Education” will take place on Wednesday, November 1st from 6PM to 8PM in Backdoor. Come and enjoy free food and entertainment, network with College of Education students and faculty, and come to get more educated about your field.

                       

            C.        Jameson DeSantis – InterFraternity Council:

1.         Party Patrol: The IFC part patrol is working very well. We just opened a relationship with the SDSU Police Department to help regulate any house parties on Tuesdays through Saturdays. Look for IFC executives working hard every Tuesday through Saturday nights.

2.         Jr. IFC: We started up the Jr. IFC program for Fall 2006. It has been revitalized so Jr. IFC members shadow current executives to help build a stronger council for the future.

 

            D.        Michelle Adams – Professional Studies and Fine Arts:

1.         PSFA meetings are 1:00PM in PSFA 200.

2.         Apply for Student Alumni Association by 5:00PM on October 23rd.

           

            E.         Erin Hogeboom – Women’s Resource Center:

1.         WRC will be having their potluck bonfire on October 20th, beginning at 6:00PM. It will be at Fiesta Island, please talk to me if you need directions. Come one, come all! It’s going to be a blast!

 

            F.         Crystal Brandán – LGBTSU:

1.         Happy National Coming Out Day!

2.         The Big Gay BBQ is today at 5:00PM at Scripps Cottage.

 

G.        Sheena Powels – Afrikan Student Union:

1.         Afrikan Student Union’s next general body meeting is October 19, 2006 and we would really love to see new faces from other organizations.

 

H.        Eric Wacenske – College of Sciences:

1.         College of Sciences will be joining team SDSU at the Breast Cancer Walk on October 22, and we’ll have a breakfast starting at 7:00AM. See Eric for more details.

2.         Calpulli Center (the new location for Health Services) is having an open house Tuesday, October 17th from 11:00AM till 2:00PM, and SHAB will be there tabling!

3.         SHAB will be conducting a “Safe Halloween” event on October 26, so stop by and pick up some goodies.

 

I.          Kristen Gozawa – College of Arts and Letters

1.         Pre-Law Society is having a USD Law School Admissions Officer speak next week. Our social event is this Thursday (10/12) at 5:30PM at Woodstock’s on El Cajon Blvd.

2.         Pre-Law Society meets every Tuesday at 2:00PM in Quetzalcoatl.

                       

            J.         Andrew Ly – Associated Business Student Council:

1.         ABSC newsletter is out!

 

K.            Jeremy Ehrlich – College of Sciences

1.         Dean Malloy spoke in support of helping students and working on the General Education process.

2.         Funds were approved for Psi Chi’s initiation ceremony on October 9th at 6:00PM.

3.         CSSC will be making ribbons for next week’s Breast Cancer Walk.

4.         CSSC meetings are every Wednesday at 1:00PM in Presidential Suite. Come check it out!

 

L.             Rebecca Steinberger – Jewish Student Union

1.         Hookah in the Sukkah at 7:00PM tonight at Hillel.
